LNK DAT question

So 396xt and 996xt have frequencies were they stop, I get 5 signal bars and either LNK DAT flashing or a NAC search showes 73D. I want to hear what it's picking up but the scanner feels I should not so I can't hear anything at all. I set sq to zero, I set the NAC to 73D I went to the channel direct entry and this thing keeps me from hearing it. How do I hear the data or whatever is there?

LNK / DAT indicates that the scanner is receiving data (not voice data, but data data). If you want to hear the undecoded data, set the channel to Analog.

Stupid question, but why would you want to hear data?
