Currently in zip code 63010 which is Jefferson county Missouri. Trying to wrap my head around which model I should get for my area including near by counties. . I'd like to stay mid range budget so I've been looking at the uniden BCD996p2 or it's 352 counter part. Looking at the frequencies for my area, would either of these model give me good coverage? I'd like to be digital trunking and looks like I would need it for first responder type coverage?

Thanks

Jefferson County is part of the SLATER system. It is a P25 trunking system with tower locations all over the county. You you would definitely need a trunking scanner, which I believe you already know. You can easily monitor fire and EMS in JeffCo but not PD. They are encrypted. There might be smaller city departments that might have occasional clear traffic.

You can scan the MO highway patrol on the statewide MOSWIN system. I am sure there are lots of other stuff you can listen to.

Ok thanks, I was wondering what the SLATER type was, appreciate the help. Guess I'm going to try to decide on one of those two models as I believe they both do p25. Debating on going cheaper also with the bc160 and just taking the loss of it's abilities.

The BCD160DN does not do trunking nor does it do P25, so you might want to rethink that move.

Main question is, what's your budget if you don't mind me asking?

I Live in St. Louis County (South Area) and the BCD436HP doesn't do well with the simulcasting. I recently got an SDS100 as a birthday present and I can safely say I'm amazed on how good it does.

Since Jefferson County is the same way, the 436 might work as mine worked a bit better in the JeffCo area (I go there a lot for reference).

If you have the budget, I'd say that you should go with an SDS which is priced at $650 at the moment. If you don't, a 436HP or 325P2 will work decently as well.

Also as jtwalker has said, it cannot do trunking which is a bit of wasted potential for that scanner in my opinion. There are some stuff analog in the area such as fire dispatch and the warning siren data frequencies. But its best to future-proof.

Yeah, honestly the SDS is out of my budget. I havnt really set a dollar amount for my budget yet but I didnt want to spend that much. Ive decided to just save up and see if there are any black friday deals or wait until the price drops a bit for it.

Saved up a bit and decided to go with the SDS100.
Trying to find a retail location near me that will sell it to me so I dont have to risk shipping. So far havnt been able to find a store that will ship it to one of their locations and allow me to pick it up from them. Any suggestions?

Nice! There isnt really any stores that sell scanners that you can buy in person around here.

I suggest ordering it online off of Amazons uniden store, got mine there

The SDS100 is on its way. I clearly still have a lot to learn as it's been years since I've had those analog pro RadioShack scanners but have been slowly adding videos to my YouTube queue for when it arrives
Probably a stupid question but Ive read that the SDS 100's antenna can be lacking for analog signals? My office/entertainment area is in the basement, wonder if there is an antenna I can run outside that would cover all of the frequencies for my area?

most of what you'll be monitoring is P25 SLATER or MOSWIN (Highway Patrol), you should be fine with the stock antenna

Remtronix is great from what I've heard, I still have yet to buy one though.
Right on, i received the SDS100 today, took it home on lunch just to make sure it fired up. It came with the OEM antenna and not the remtronix one that ive seen some retailers include with it, but thats ok. Going to update the firmware when I get home, and get sentenel software installed on the PC and slowly start customizing things. Im excited.

Nice! Welcome to the digital scanner club! PM me if you need any help!

I should mention that if you wanted a remtronix included you would have to buy it off of zipscanners or scanner master and specify it if I recall correctly.
