Details are still being interpreted so please forgive me for any inaccuracies.

3 Mayerthorpe members and one Whitecourt member were killed by gunfire sometime overnight at a crime scene in rural Mayerthorpe. They were providing continuity of a scene where an illicit drug factory and a "chop shop" operation had been seized by warrant on Wednesday.

The members were found when a fifth member arrived at the scene some time on Thursday morning to follow up a stolen vehicle investigation possibly related to the "chop shop". A further search found the gunman nearby dead of self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

As per CTV news at 6pm Mountain time, police are still at scene investigating.

Further updates..

Apparently shots were fired at or around 1000 hours MST Thursday. There were other officers on the roadway who heard the shots and took cover before calling for backup, which came in the form of ERT (SWAT) teams from Edmonton and Calgary RCMP detachments, the Edmonton Police Service helicopter, and units from the Edmonton Garrison of the Canadian Forces (who were stood down later without being utilized).

Such a horrible thing:

I did hear on 680News here in Toronto that the gunman was a 'badass.' The news (constantly repeated) that the man had scanners and that the RCMP (I am paraphrasing sp?) here were to watch what they said 'cause the man had a scanner.
I guess anyone who wants can listen to an audio feed of 680news in Toronto but I did some checking on here. I see no info for the RCMP. Are they 'scannable/" or is it just fearmongering by the news media?

The RCMP in Alberta use conventional 155mhz repeaters of sorts, in a system they call PACS - Province of Alberta Communications System. It's scannable except for a handful of channels which use, I think, DES DVP.

RCMP in my area are very aware of scanners and take care to observe privacy. On the other hand, they also make use of scannists whenever it will help them. More than once I've heard members from my local detachment say "Anyone who's seen (John Doe), in the past 12 hours, give me a phone call at detachment please."

Thanks Jay. Wouldn't the RCMP switch over when monitoring a large and important to them grow-up?

Isn't it against the law though in Canada to repeat what you hear though? It's funny though that the RCMP, which is your prov police right? would ask civilians for help. Cool though.

My understanding is that the now deceased gunman was also an avid scanner listener. This is just wonderful ... it won't be long til the federal government makes it illegal to own a scanner in Canada. Also .. as far as I am aware the gunman did not commit suicide but was taken out by an RCMP sniper. Guess only time will tell what really happened.

Where are you all getting the information that the gunman was an "avid scanner listener" ? I found nothing of that on CTV News website, CNN.com or Canada.com or is that just hear-say?

As someone who listened to 680 back in the days when it was CFTR, let me reassure you that 'sensational' is very much in their dictionary..

The guys FORCE me to listen to 680, nothing else for news.

Re the scanner listener .. Edmonton Sun March 4 edition. But then again the Edmonton Sun is hardly what I would call a credible newspaper, but more like a tabloid style kind of paper.
