Hi Guys,
Wonder if you can help with help mounting my Log Periodic please ?
The antenna will be positioned on a mast with a 360 rotator unit and is to be used for receive only , can someone advise ay what orientation the antenna should be ?
A. Flat/Horizontal ?
B. Vertical like a pointed arrowhead ?

As I mentioned , receive only for my scanner monitoring - Civil and Military Airband , some High Band VHF users and UHF users not above 470mhz over here in the UK.

Thanks in advance , really appreciate any advice....The antenna suppliers claim a range of 25-900mhz ,but I'm a realist and know some of their claims are a little ambitious !! but at least if I mount the antenna the right way , I might stand a chance of hearing something !!!!

Thanks
Kevin (UK Firefighter working for USAF here in East of England)

You want the overall antenna positioned horizontally (flat) with its individual elements orientated vertically (as opposed to horizontally). All of the VHF and UHF stuff you want to hear is vertically polarized - hence the vertically orientated elements.

I may have misinterpreted your description of flat vs vertical. You want it to look like the view below

MD ScanFan,
Thank you so much for the replies , never ceases to amaze me how quickly people on here reply with not just a few words in their reply , but a really good explanation...unfortunately here in the UK my experiences of forums have been similar to kids in a playground !!!
Anyway , the photo is exactly what I needed and if the weather is good early next week when I'm off duty I will plan to install the antenna...photos to follow !
Thanks again MD ScanFan for responding and anyone else who saw the post , maybe answered the question for another forum user.

Glad to help. A log periodic on rotator is nice setup.

Out of curiosity, what is the mfg and model number of the antenna? As you mentioned, some antenna claims are overly optimistic (i.e., misleading). Proper log periodic coverage from 25 to 900 MHz calls for a pretty big antenna.

Morning,
My antenna is :
Also , via an auction site here in the UK (not Ebay , just local saleroom online) I saw a few items listed together of a Bike Rack, 2 dining room chairs and a " radio mast"..photos and descriptions really vague however I put a bid in and won. Now, my winning bid was £5.00, not £50 or £500 so I wasn't expecting much. I went to collect my items and paid my money - the mast turned out to be a brand new HILOMAST which weighed quite a bit , 7 metres when fully extended plus footpump. Only 1 company in the UK supplies this product at a cost currently of £1055 !!!!
I already have a winch operated tripod mast , but now have this new mast now with rotator attached !

Hope the above link works , the company has been established a while and carries a wide range of products , definitely worth looking at their Homepage , not sure if prices are comparable to the US ? Only a few radio stores left here in the UK....boy I miss Radio Shack (stores here were called TANDY) but closed15-20 years ago ?

I have eyed that antenna in the past. It looks to be well built and has good reviews. Right now most of my desired VHF-UHF signals come from multiple directions so I only using omnis.

That's a bargain on the mast. Great catch.

I worked on a project about 30yrs ago where radar cross section measurements had to be done from an airborne platform and it needed a VHF/UHF radar antenna. The various antenna models from WJ, Teledyne and other military suppliers would not fit inside the nose cone/radome of the radar equipped plane. I suggested the Create CLP-5130 as it covered the needed frequency range and our company bought two of them from the local ham radio store and with the longest elements bent slightly backwards it fit inside the nose cone of the radar equipped plane. It worked fine and there was a gabillion $$ worth of aircraft and equipment taking the airborne radar measurements all through a hobby type scanner antenna.

Hmm…are the VHF and UHF users you wish to monitor using SSB or FM? I ask because those using SSB typically have their antennas horizontally polarized.

The only web users are hams, so I don’t think he’ll be using a scanner that can receive these, so vertical polarity is correct. An excellent bargain here. The value and resale value of this is serious money. Excellent purchase.
