I don't know if this has been mentioned, I searched but didn't find anything on it.

I picked up an ELK brand dual band log periodic antenna today and it's incredible. It's the model 2M/440L5. It's kind of pricey but I think it's worth it. It was around $75.

The main thing is that it's so small. It's only a little bigger than a 440Mhz yagi but it's dual band. It's made like a tank. It's all aluminum with black anodized elements that are color coded on the ends and just screw on. You can keep it in a bag and put it together in a moments notice. The only thing I saw that was an issue was the color coding was colored tape wrapped around the end. The tape was hot from being in the bag in my vehicle and started to come loose when I took it out. I put some strips of clear packng tape around them so they wouldn't come off and I would end up not knowing what went where.

I put it up in my attic mainly as a scanner antenna and I'm hearing stuff I could never get before. I threw out the old discone after trying this thing. Stuff that was 1 or 2 bars on the discone and RS little ground plane is up near or at a full meter now.

I saw that they make a 220 version. I bet that would make a hell of a mil satcom system.

Anyway, if anyone is looking for a small directional gain antenna I think this is the best of all worlds.

Seen that antenna in a AES catalog and was wondering about how long the longest element was.Am using a Cushcraft AR-270 right now in the attic with my 2055 and am always looking for more gain.

How is the Elk antenna on vhf aircraft band? Or is this out of it's range? Thanks for any more info on this as I am thinking of getting myself one.

It seems to do great on Vhf air. I'm hearing all kinds of new stuff there.

It has lessened alot of the dead carriers and other junk on the bands that I used to get from various appliances in the house (Linksys router) etc...

I have it on a 50 foot run of Andrew small diameter hardline. Even with the extra un-needed cable I'm getting quite a bit more than I did with the R/S discone that had been in its place. I definitely wouldn't recommend it for 800 since that's not what it's made for but so far it has been working better even in the 800 range than the discone did.
