Had HCJB on 49 meters earlier - database said from Ecuador. Thought they dismantled that Pifo site to build an airport?

k9rzz,

That's my understanding. According to HCJB's own website and their Wikipedia page, the Pifo site was shut down in 2009. I did see a news item on Radio Netherland's site that said HCJB was planning to build a new site in Ecuador, but it's not there yet. Here's a link to that story -> HCJB plans to build new SW site in Ecuador

Perhaps you heard one of their broadcasts from Santiago, Chile. I really do hope they rebuild a site in Ecuador. There's just something nostalgic about "The Voice of the Andes" coming to you from Ecuador...

I caught yet another daytime DX-12070khz DeutschWelle out of Rwanda-only this one is not listed in the spreadsheet so I am putting it out there for you guys to try for
DeutschWelle via Rwanda video by ridgerocker2001 - Photobucket
..no "English" listing and no time coordinate. So I officially put it here as DeutschWelle in English out of Rwanda in the hour of 21-22utc:)
I have a longer video of it that would not load up for some reason and it showed sports discussions in Africa and mentions of the Congo and a break where a guy says something like "listen online at D.W. Africa" so I concluded the broadcast is from their relay in Rwanda.

You might want to grab a more up-to-date list, that time slot/freq are correct and active on my list. 12070 kHz, 2100-2157 UTC, English, Deutsche Welle out of Kigali Rwanda with 250 kW TX power.

I'm getting faint audio right now (0200 UTC) - sounds possibly Spanish - on 3279.9 khz AM. I think it might be La Voz del Napo in Ecuador - running all of 2.5 kw

Copied quite a few of those myself

I'm in the midwest in a suburb of St. Louis MO. I had trouble figuring out where they were transmitting from but I could tell it was a good distance due to the fading. I didn't want to go to work today. Just wanted to continue listening...

FWIW: S9 is the highest S unit, then it's +db over that. S9 + 10db, S9 + 20db, etc

It says so right on the meter!

Thanks for the education-I was never taught that, Could have been taken care of in a PM to perhaps save some embarrasment but hey it's fine. Sorry everyone for not being perfect with the signal reporting. So please explain how I should put it in the loggings-instead of saying "S9-15" I should be saying "S9 over 15" or "S9 +15DB"? I googled for an answer and came up with nothing.

Hey what are you using for shortwave reception? Are you running an outside antenna? Great DXs from your location! Now ya know from where they came-yup they are definately distant:D

On most of the lists I belong to, english descriptions of the signal strength are encouraged. I think that's a good idea here, too - KIS (keep it simple) is quite useful for the newcomers especially.

There have been many 'standards' floated around over the years; SINPO, SINFO, SIO (similar to the hams use of RST) and others. All of these so-called standards developed over the years as folks used S meters to 'eStimate' a signal level. Problem is, that there is no real standard for what is a S9 signal - it could be 1 voltage (and that's really all a S meter does) on one model, and another voltage on a completely different radio. In fact there's no real calibration standard between units - one R75 could read S9, another might read 10/S9 and they're using the same antenna.

So to me, it's best to continue the 'tradition' of sorts - describe the signal strength in English. Use a common sense judgement. Don't be afraid to describe interference too - like if one station is splattering all over another (Arnie, are you reading this? Doubtful...). 73 Mike
