I used to take my scanners to various festivals, Ozz Fest, Monsters of Rock. Since I am "stone cold deaf" from the flattened hair cells in my ears due to decibel slaughter, I did not hear much on the radio once the music started.

I used to worry about getting busted for nefarious activities, but I don't give a rip anymore.

Have a grand time! Who are the headliners? I read in Metal Injection that Porno for Pyros are getting back together.

Okay
Think I caused a bit of confusion here with my wording of the post.
I was asking what events channel or citywide channel lollapalooza would be on this year, if anyone knows
The festival takes place in Grant Park, which is in the first district so it is in the confines of radio zone four’s covering area however, that is only regular dispatch traffic.
I am more interested in the actual channel, they will be using for offices detail to the fest.
Thank you, and sorry for the confusion.

ok everyone
surprise surprise
it's on event 1 so we can't moneter them
isn't there anything that we can do about this as it is extremely frustrating
if only they would put up a dealayed feed of event one and two as well as the zones

Anyone know if event one has gone fully encrypted
Didn’t hear squad talk once apart from doing some radio checks and saying hello to car 100 about nine or 10 in the morning

What does it matter? RRDB shows all zones fully encrypted P25 conventional
..and since the entire CPD side was available to be streamed on a cell phone with a bluetooth device, and if you have evil intent (mass shooting, dirty bomb etc), and events like this are labeled as "targets" by the federal authorities, it's probably a good idea to encrypt large gatherings. CFD JHAT Teams have been on an encrypted talkgroup for many events since their conversations were being "streamed" on CFD Joint Ops. Some talk that CFD EMS might be heading in that direction soon too for the same reason. Unless you've ever worked in the "blueprint" of one of these (like I have), and understand the agencies that are involved, you'd agree it's a good idea too.

And if God forbid an event such as a dirty bomb or mass shooting happened, word would get out anyway. So how is encrypting making a difference? Sounds like "security theater" to me, or did they just not want the public to know the ammount of suspicious packages that turn out to be BS. Or did this have to do when someone almost did a Vegas style shooting at Lolla and got caught? Either way I think having the bulk of the traffic in the clear would be better, have the special operations stuff encrypted. Make it make sense

If the person or persons knows the whereabouts of specific agencies and plan on doing harm, that should make sense. I don't agree with encrypting dispatch traffic, especially since CPD has reprogrammed all the radios with these encrypted zones. Preventing the word "getting out" is not the goal here, it's "preventing as best as they can" from something like that happening and unsecured radio communications that can be streamed could be an issue. You have to look beyond the scanners and think how this world has changed very recently and the methods used have become more complex.

I can see this making sense for the units and agencies down there that operate in covert or undercover mode. I can also see why they might feel that a suspicious package call that turns out to be BS might cause a panic. But I feel that having most of the detial traffic on the clare would be beneficial as it would give the public a glance into what CPD and CFD go through at these events.

It’s a very complex and controversial issue.
I can see from both sides to be honest.
I think the amount of a problem that unencrypted Radios could create is minuscule compared to other things.
I think that the main traffic for these events should be unencrypted and special Ops should use encryption absolutely.
However, I’ve never worked in one of these before and I do think we have a tendency to not look beyond the scanners as perhaps I didn’t when creating this post.
I said it was extremely frustrating, which I don’t take back necessarily, it is
To be doing something as a hobby for so long and then have it taken away from you is frustrating however it is so true that the world has changed and that methods of criminals that want to commit these types of acts have changed and will continue to change, and as technology advances, unencryption in these types of events may become a bigger problem than I think it is now
