We just purchased a BCD536HP and have figured out how to scan and find stuff in the area, but we are trying to find our local police department. I found their information in a list of TalkGroups and the table includes the DEC, AFS, Mode, Alpha Tag, Description and Tag information, but now I can't figure out how to find them on the scanner and then once we do, how to add them so we can listen. At the very top of that page is a list of System Frequencies. Do we have to go to those frequencies and scan?

Welcome to RadioReference, Megin

From your description, I presume that you are referring to a trunked system. If the system is on the database here, the information is incuded in the database used in Sentinel and your scanner. For scanning a trunked system, you need to have both the sites that carry your agency of interest, as ell as having the talkgroup information. If you append the system from the database to a Favorites list, all that information will be carried to your list at the same time.

If you can provide your location (city, or county, and state is sufficient), as well as which department(s) you want to include, then we can provide more specific information.

Steve,

Thank you. We are located in Long Beach, MS (Harrison County) and we would like all of the groups under Harrison County Public Safety. The Talkgroups include Harrison County Sheriff, Harrison County Fire/EMS, Mutual Aid, and Long Beach.

Do we need to download the Sentinel software in order to add these?

We were able to use the Sentinel software and create a Favorites list, etc. and transferred it to the scanner. However, now it won't move off the first simulcast channel. Is there something I should do at the scanner so it will start scanning the Favorite's list?

You definitely need to download & install Sentinel. It's free, and needed to update the database in your scanner, as well as apply any firmware updates that might be released. The database your scanner had when it was shipped is likely months, if not more than a year out of date. Database updates, barring some sort of system malfunction at Uniden, are usually available by mid-morning on Mondays, and contain the data as existed the preceding Sunday. If you don't already have the link to get Sentinel, you can find it on this web page:

There is an online, 'Easier to Read' manual for Sentinel here. There is also one that covers your 536HP.

You can find information on your county in the database. Your city, Long Beach, as well as most Harrison County public safety agencies are on the county's trunked system: Harrison County EDACS That system has both analog and ProVoice talkgroups. The ones that are ProVoice have the letter D in the Mode column on the trunked system's page. It appears that Fire, EMS, and the county agencies, such as Public Works, use Analog on the system, which your536HP can receive right out of the box. However, most law enforcement, both at the county and city levels, are using ProVoice. The 536HP, as well as other late model Uniden scanners, cannot receive ProVoice as shipped. However, there is a paid upgrade available that enables ProVoice reception as long as it is not encrypted. (Nothing on your county's system is currently tagged as encrypted.) There are comments on the current system's page as well as down in the Mississippi Regional Forum that eventually, the county's EDACS system will be upgraded to P25. When is not specified, and that comment first appeared several years ago. Someone in the Mississippi forum might have more accurate information on a timeline, but I did not see one on a quick look through the forum. The EDACS format has been discontinued, and is no longer supported by the manufacturer, Harris. In many areas, including mine (DFW Metro) EDACS systems are being replaced with P25 (digital) systems, either Phase I or Phase II. If and when your system moves to P25, the 536HP will still be able to receive it, excepting any talkgroups that switch to encrypted.

To receive the current ProVoice talkgroups, you would need to purchase the ProVoice Upgrade. The cost is $50.00. Uniden charges a fee because they have to pay a royalty, for each upgraded scanner, to the owner of that format. I added the upgrade to one of my scanners as, at that time, DFW Airport was still using a ProVoice system. While the airport has since changed to a P25 Phase II system, Abilene & San Antonio/Bexar County (here in Texas) are still using ProVoice, though both plan to eventually move to P25.

You can append the current Harrison system to a Favorites list in Sentinel. Once you've installed, and updated, Sentinel then open the program and click on the Database at the upper left corner of the main screen.
Click on the '+' (plus) sign besides USA to open the list of states.
74535
That expands the list of states.

Scroll down to your state, Mississippi, then click the + sign by the state to open the list of counties.
Scroll down to your county and click to open it as well.
Click on County Systems.
74536

Now, you can see the systems in your county. The entry labeled simply Harrison has the conventional frequencies for the county and a few other entities, Farther down, you'll find Harrison Public Safety, the system you need for your local and county law enforcement.
74537

To add that system to a Favorites list, right-click on it to select. You'll get a pop-up menu. Choose the one that says Append to Favorites List
74538

You are then given the option to add to an existing list, or create a new list. Once you've made your choice, the system, as well as all of it's departments and sites, will be available on the list you chose. You can then oen the list in the Favorites Editor, either choosing that option from the drop-down Edit menu, or by clicking on the icon that resembles a star with a pencil on it, just under the lower case w of the View drop dwn menu. In the editor, you can then delete agencies not of interest, such as public works or utilities, edit tags tags, or assign alert colors to individual talkgroups. I use Red for Fire Department TGIDs, for example, but you can use whatever you want.

Be sure and review the active Service Types in your profile. As shipped, only the Dispatch types are active for Public Safety (Law, Fire, EMS, and Multi). But you should also enable the Tac and Talk types as well (Law Tac, Fire Tac, etc).

There is a wealth of other information available here in the forums, as well as in the Wiki. Start with this page, as well as the links on it,

We recently purchased a BCD536HP and created Long Beach as a favorite and purchased the ProVoice upgrade. Long Beach only brings in the Gulfport *Confirmed LCN* and Biloxi *Confirmed LCN* which are the frequencies. There is no traffic heard at all. We are trying to figure out if there is a setting we might be missing. Any suggestions?

Did you enable service types? Did you follow the rest of the instructions you have been given? Did you even bother reading the "Easier to read" manual at all? Did you properly set up a favorites list and enable the quick keys?

Like milf says, make sure that all service types are enabled. Also make sure that the download and monitor options are on in sentinal. If you are not picking up anything, something is definately wrong as Harrision County Public Service site is very active. I'm listening to it right now on my 436HP.

As a fellow MS. Gulf Coaster, I am curious if the provice upgrade will work on my Home Patrol-2. I down loaded Sentinel last night so I could update my firmware and data base and waiting for the USB cable to be deliverd. MeginMurphy did those solutions work for you? SnowDigger in Kiln MS.

I don't think there is a provoice upgrade for the Home Patrol 2. I think only the 436 and 536 can receive provoice with the upgrade.

There is no ProVoice upgrade for the HP-2, nor are there upgrades for DMR & NXDN.

However, in addition to the 436HP & 536HP, the BCD325P2 and BCD996P2, as well as the SDS100 & SDS200, can all utilize the ProVoice upgrade. In addition, these six scanners can also get upgrades for both DMR & NXDN systems.

Looking at Harrison County in the database, I see several of the casinos and resorts are using either DMR or NXDN. There are also several DMR channels in use by the Biloxi school district.

Thanks again, my brain is getting fried with all of this tech. Looking through the wealth of info is a little over whelming. I will still do my up grades on the Home Patrol and get started on upgrading the firmware on my 396XT was wondering on how update the data base, if it is possible ? Going through the RR data base I see that a lot of 700 freq's are new to me in Hancock County. Have to remember how to set up ID searches

BCD396XT is pretty simple using FreeSCAN or ProScan or ARC XT for updataing the DB and programming etc... To update the FW - BCD396XTFirmwareUpdate < UnidenMan4 < TWiki
Just a FYI - FreeSCAN, is not being updated, or modified and is currently a dead project. It will still function, but there will most likely never be another update for it. ProScan is your best bet, it is not free, but there are constant free updates for life and it supports almost all the Uniden's there are.
As for setting things up - Your best friend: Easier to Read BCD396XT Digital Scanner Manual

Thanks milf, I Knew that you was listening. I also hope there are step by step instructions that go with that. I'm rather thick headed, being a transplanted yankee from Terre Haute PS web site for ProScan

www.proscan.org On the Mark's Scanner stuff its easy to follow step by step. Same for the late UP Man's twiki's, and Bob keeps his instructions on ProScan easy. And I am the reverse of you, born and raised MS, now live in Indy just a bit up from TH.

If you export a hpe file of your Long Beach favorites list and attach it here, I will take a look at it for any problems. Be aware that you have to enable the service types in the profile.
