Hey all, I live out on the East End of Long Island. I just picked up an R/S 2055 to monitor the Mil/Air Freqs. However...I have about 200 Freqs. I have gathered from around the net, and I don't hear anything at all. And I also have an ANG Base not even 2 miles from my house...the landing "pattern" goes right over my back yard!!! So my question is....does anyone have any Freqs. that will ACTUALLY WORK???

What antenna are you using? If it's just the little stick that comes with the 2055, it's not going to be very easy to hear any milair. A good antenna, fed with the proper coax, is an absolute must . A Diamond discone, NilJon, ScanTenna, and others are all worth checking out.

As for your ANG base, a question or two on the NY forum, and on the forums I will mention a bit later, may bring some answers. Often ANG groups use the 138-144 Mhz range (in AM mode), but that's still a tall range of real estate to cover.

I see you posted the same question on the NY forum - you might want to watch that; cross posting is considered a no-no...

As a starting point, I would pull the ZNY ARTCC UHF frequencies from the database. I would also do a search on N2NOV and NF2G's websites for the big 3 in the area (LaGuardia, Newark, JFK) and concentrate on their UHF freqs. I don't know if they would fly in your area, but I would also consider putting some Bradley (Ct.) freqs as well.

Folks on the Maryland milair thread have noted 4 new ZNY freqs that don't seem to be listed anywhere; these are
292.15
282.65
327.6
336.075

Finally, I'd jump in on the ScanCom and ConnScan Yahoo groups - it surprises me that I've never seen much from the NY area on the well-known Milcom group at QTH.Net, but there may be some lurkers there, too.

If you do come up with a good list, I'd like to see it - in fact, I'd probably turn it into a Wiki page in a heartbeat. There just doesn't seem to be a good list of active NY freqs anywhere, apart from the DoD publications (which will be going away in less than a month....)

[edit] Ken, who posts frequently on the MilAirCommsChat Yahoo board, has these 3 freqs for app/dep for Bradley;
323.2
325.8
348.3

If you don't have them on your list, it might pay to add them.

These, of course, aren't milair freqs - but thanx anyway.

Don't forget to check Airnav for additional freqs - it's as good a starting point as any.

One thing about the ARTCC listings - it's been discussed extensively both in the aircraft forum and other places, so I won't go through all of it - but the ATA100 listings that are used here are not the most accurate. For example, anything listed 'do not publish' I understand refers to old Tac freqs that hasn't been used in years, so give anything like that a pass. Stick to the listings that follow the ATA100 data; you'll be much better off.

Interesting list; I'm willing to bet the reason you didn't find any milair freqs on the database is because you didn't know where to look - examine the bottom of

http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&stid=36

There are 3 ARTCCs listed here; you want the New York and Boston centers (since it seems, according to the map, that the eastern tip of LI sticks into the southernmost edge of their coverage area). For the Boston center, I'd choose the sites closest to you.

The freqs you want are between 225-400 Mhz, and there's several possibilities.

73s and good hunting...Mike
