The price is decent and i realize it is a chore too program but I can handle that...So Good Scanner or no for 300 bucks new?

It's an excellent scanner with little or no reported issues. Great price too!
The 996P2 is an excellent scanner if you have no Simulcast issues. For $300 I would be tempted to buy one again.

Very good scanner for a non-simulcast environment and not difficult to program with the correct software.

It looks like Winneshiek County uses all conventional frequencies. No simulcast problems. Excellent scanner for that application. Go for it!

i will take a 996p2 over any other scanner on the market today, less problematic, easy to program, and a lot cheaper on the pocket book..

You can use FreeSCAN to program it. The software is FREE! I monitor the York Co PA Harris P25 Phase 2 simulcast system with one and it sounds fine.

Save your $$ and get a SDS200. If Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications System (ISICS) is a system of interest to you, then simulcast distortion may be a possibility

Before my BCD436HP died I was hearing the HP and DOT just fine on ISICS on what I think is likely the Waukon repeater which is the only one I can get a signal from at my location in the river bottom of NE Iowa. If it works as good as that one did,And I hope to get that Scanner back its at Uniden for repairs, I will be satisfied. We still have alot of Analog and phase 1 usage in this area also BTW for now until they change systems which they all will be doing in the next year or 2..
Both my 996P2 scanners sound great on Phase II on the ILL-Digital Starcom…..There doing very well on NXDN and DMR also....
Looking at his screen, he is trying to receive simulcast systems so his "sounds terrible" audio is not surprising.
I just got mine a few days ago, and just started programming it tonight and it sounds great on simulcast and everything... why pay $700.00 when you can get everything for around $400.00
You won the simulcast lottery at your location. Put it in your vehicle and drive around with a SDS for comparison. You'll find no difference in some places, but in others the 996 gets nothing while the SDS chatters away.
I've lost many times playing the simulcast lottery in the Orlando area with various scanners. Last year I brought my SDS200 and was able to finally listen to the system without any problems.
