Hi, I am hoping someone out there has the answers to my issue. I have an older Bearcat handheld scanner (Bearcat H/L) and I want to convert the antenna from the screw type to a BNC adapter so I can attach it to a dedicated outside antenna. Does anyone know if such an adapter exists? and if so, what's it called and where do I find one?

You may be referring to a SMA to BNC Adapter. I could be wrong if it's the older type so I'm sure others will respond.

It's not an SMA. I think it's a threaded connector and I'm not aware of any adapters offhand. I will check later if I have the chance (and if nobody else has provided a source). The Bearcat H/L is a 70's era scanner.

I guess I gotta ask... WHAT are you using it for? It's only good on Low Band and Ham Bands these days, and uses crystals (shudder).

It indeed has to be threaded and RivardJ that looks real close to what I need....Voyager, I have the cystals, the same one from when I bought the thing in the 70's....still works fine and the local departments are still on those freq's for now

No, the H/L doesn't support narrowbanding and nearly all of VHF-Hi is narrowbanded which means low audio and adjacent channel interference.

We have discussed this before and I know what you are saying. But as I have said before I have not noticed any changes at all either way .My crystal rigs are chugging along just fine.Maybe I am lucky but even with the narrow banding they still work as intended will the OP have the same success one can only hope.

Maybe you got lucky. I can hear adjacent stations on my scanners when in NBFM mode. Or maybe your antenna system is so inefficient that you simply cannot hear any distant stations. (not a criticism per se, just a possible explanation)

Specifically, I can hear an adjacent channel station that is used about 40 miles away from me when monitoring a frequency used 20 miles in nearly the opposite direction.

On the other hand, I have some BC-IIIs that have stock antennas on that "work fine" only because they can't hear that far. Of course, they would not be any good should another closer user come on the air.

So, I guess we have different definitions of "work fine".

Don't think my antenna system is inefficient.Actually it works quite well here in my area of SW Pennsylvania and Ohio and WV also so whatever you think. Now back to the OP if you have the means buy that adapter and give it a shot you might get a pleasant surprise.

I also have a BC100, that has a screw in antenna, the screw is thinner and longer than my screw threads on the BC H/L.....any thought if there is a thread to bnc adapter for this model?

At first I thought you were buzzed, thinking the BC-100 has a BNC connector on top. Then I seen the difference between the BC100 and the BC100XLT.

Can you take a pix of the bottom of the antenna. I did a little googling, and can only find pictures of the antenna screwed into the radio.

It's like the pic above, only it IS thinner. Mine is in a box somewhere (without batteries).

Oh, I still remember the absolute joy of not needing crystals, and WOW! 16 channels! I can put the whole county in there!

What I meant was, take the antenna off the radio and show the bottom of the antenna.
A picture of the antenna in the radio don't tell me much, sorry.

Attached is the threaded end of each antenna that I am looking to replace with the adapter....The one on the left is the antenna for the BC H/L, the one on the right is for the BC 100

Tried e-bay yet? I have a need of oddball adapters and their a tough find. Been somewhat lucky on the bay with most coming over from Japan. Keep searching Goolgle it and you may hit the jackpot.

Good Luck
