Hey guys, love this message board, great posts. Im looking for some equipment hopefully in DECENT shape, not beat up and dented all to heaven and back. First thing: VHF Handhelds with battery(s), charger, and antenna, or base stations that at least work. Second: UHF Handhelds with battery(s), charger, and antenna, Third: 800mhz Handhelds with battery(s), charger, and antenna, or 800mhz base station, both that can pick up the safe-t system of indiana. Im a certified EMS responder and my little handheld is starting to go put on me, so i need a replacement. I also travel to ohio and michigan all the time, and boy there are some major accidents goin that way sometimes. it would be nice to be able to call for help. my cell phone is about worthless over in ohio, and most of michigan.

Now my dumb question: this past wensday, i was on I75 in michigan, and saw SEVERAL accidents due to the slick roads, and the statewide police freq, didnt seem to work. I made a distress call twice on that channel, and got no response. Took the first arriving police officer nearly 45 minutes to get to the scene. Thankfully no one was seriously hurt in the 3 car pile up/slide off but you know it could have been worse. Does any one know if they still use that statewide channel, or have they all switched over to the 800mhz system? If anyone can help with either of these two, please respond to: paramedic18@sbcglobal.net . THANKS!! Happy Holidays to everyone.

It would appear from the radioreference database that Michigan State Police are on a statewide 800 MHZ digital system.

The 155.865 channel is no longer in use in most areas of Michigan. MSP posts monitor the MPSCS exclusively including the ICALL and ITAC conventional channels. 155.340 is still mandated on all EMS vehicles and hospitals and 155.355 is required as a car-to-car freq on all EMS vehicles. Maybe that would be an access point for you. You might also consider getting a ham license for better access while traveling.

Also, mobile scanning in Michigan requires a permit from MSP or a ham license. EMS status alone isn't enough. Hope that helps.

He wasn't "just scanning" he was trying to contact MSP on the radio.

As for contacting MSP on the radio you need the nation wide 800Mhz channels in your ambulance to do so. These are simplex channels and MSP does monitor them, and in fact all PD's in Michigan should have them in their cars as well, these are the replacements for the 155.475 so out of state/area units can contact local authorities if needed.
