Hello-
Looking for suggestions for what to monitor (conventional and/or trunked) during upcoming Gatlinburg visit.

TIA

Other than the NPS I dont monitor. I enjoy the mountains and the stuff to do there. From my past research much is encrypted. There is a GMRS repeater I heard on last trip a coupel weeks ago.

There are multiple threads on this that indicate more of encryptionwhich was why I stated that. I would do a search to find info. I guess YMMV but on my APX I heard nothing in Gatlinburg or PF on conventional.

gatlinburg is all ready enc on the nxdn /land air system . in fact all of sevier county is enc. with the expection of the county fire page outs .
Even still it's a surprise to me that someone over there didn't submit an update to get mode "NXDN" changed to "NXDNE" if full encryption is in play (for 5 months or more?) but I digress...

I had the SDS200 on when I was down there for 2 days last year. I don't recall specifics, but I didn't hear much at all, not everything was encrypted though.

Copied from my post in previous threads: “All Sevier County Fire and Rescue Departments are Paged out on 464.225 MHz with a PL of 136.5. Gatlinburg Fire and EMS is also paged out on 453.850 with a PL of 100.0. Sevier County Ambulance Service is paged out on 462.950 MHz with a PL of 127.3 You can also hear the different dispatch centers communicate on Interagency; it is 460.500 with a PL of 100.0. Central 911 Dispatch only Dispatches Fire and EMS. 100 is Sevier County Sheriff Dispatch, 500 is Gatlinburg Police Dispatch, and 700 is Pigeon Forge Police Dispatch. You can also put in Seymour Vol. Fire Department in there, it is 154.310 with a PL of 103.5. That is their primary dispatch channel, but they also use TACN for some responses and for talk around communications They cover parts of Sevier, Knox, and Blount Counties. Sevier County Central, Blount Comm Center, and Knox Fire (Knox AMR/Rural Metro Dispatch at Knox 911) all communicate with them on that frequency. Other than paging and Seymour Fire Department, everyone else is on digital for their primary communications. Fire, EMS, Rescue, and Law Enforcement are on a UHF Digital Trunking System and it is a Rental System through Land Air. Every public safety channel is encrypted on that radio system. The only exception is Pigeon Forge Police and they operate on the statewide system known as TACN and it is a 700/800 MHZ Digital Trunking System. PFPD is unencrypted on their Main channel. Some PFPD Secondary channels can have partial encryption usage. National Park Service is VHF and they digital system as well, with the LE Rangers and the Park Dispatch Center utilizing encryption sometimes. It is my understanding that most non-LE Ranger radios do not have encryption keys within the radios. All the towers within the park are linked (at least when they links work). The LE Rangers in the park also sometimes use NC's VIPER Statewide System and TN's TACN Statewide System. The GSMNP TACN 1 talk group is typically linked to VIPER.”

Also, Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) uses TACN just like Pigeon Forge Police. Sevier County is in THP District 1 and borders District 5. The Pigeon Forge Trolleys also now operate on TACN. For Sevier County, I would put in Greentop and English MTN/Newport radio sites. Coverage is not great in Gatlinburg for TACN but there is plans to fix that soon. I will also that Cocke County borders Sevier County. The Sheriffs Office is UHF NXDN conventional and in the clear. Cocke County Fire, Rescue, and EMS are UHF analog. Blount County also borders Sevier County and they are mostly on TACN. The Law Enforcement Agencies and Fire agencies that utilize TACN in Blount has selectable encryption. It is the comms center choice and the field users choice of when they want to use it and not use it. Their EMS provider is AMR/Rural Metro and they are on TACN in the clear. Their rescue squad also use that channel. Townsend also is very close to Sevier county and their Volunteer Fire Department uses 453.075 MHZ with a PL of 94.8.

Most of the theme parks run LTR standard and then Gatlinburg. has a whole lot of business radio freq but sometimes they need a little bit of help because Walmart doesn't know Businesses (Sevier County) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference Here is a good website for you to look at if you want to look at business. But the Gatlinburg CW dispatch using an nxdn or NFM now would probably be helpful for you
