Hey guys, I looking for a good external antenna for my Yatchboy 400 PE. I've tried several different home made antennas, none of them have worked so far. I'm interested in listening to USCG, MWARA, USAF, and all of that intersting stuff... I am located in West Alabama, which would put me away from many of the transmitting sites, or atleast i assume so. I have a 40ft mast outside, and i'm sure the higher i could mount it the better. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I would like to suggest a radio if your up to that. I have got a degen/kaito 1103 and I had a YB400 PE and this radio blew it out the water. This little gem is a great radio. It comes with quite a long wire to hook up as an antenna and it takes it fine with no overloading. I have picked up stations from all over the world with this radio. Best part is you can find it for around 90$ online. Great investment! The america model is the KA1103!

It's not the height that matters so much on HF as length. I also have the YB PE 400 and use a multi band trap antenna. It wasn't cheap at $80 but you can build a very similar antenna for almost nothing. There are clear instructions at http://www.hamuniverse.com/shortwaveantenna.html . You can also buy a simple long wire kit at Radio Shack for $10 that does a reasonably good job. Too much antenna on the 400 will just lead to front end overload so getting a really "big" antenna may leave you worse off than a simple long wire.

That's a great site, Jim. Be sure to add that to the Wikis for the utility and shortwave broadcast areas; there's an antennas topic there. We need more of the 'homebrew' type explanations; there's many commercial antennas that do very well, but folks need to know that homebrewing antennas is just as rewarding - and maybe cheaper, too.
Or if you don't know how to use the Wiki, I'll add it.
