Joe I Live over in So Toms River . I just bought a Uniden Bct8 Base, a Scantenna and Butel software to program it . I can get Middle Town , Stafford , Little egg Harbor and Aircraft Flying Over PA. NJSP you don't even need a antenna to pickup they are just BOOMING . However its not a digital scanner so i cant here Dover Pd [Toms River Twp]. I think that would require about 500 Beans or so for Digital, not sure if they are encrypted or not. I Know the Bct8 is Older But its working Just Fine for me. Digital is my next Purchase.

If your looking for a handheld that will do just about everything, get the Uniden 396 - it's the most comprehensive handheld out here right now...

Remember that Toms River Township PD uses a lot of encryption and Jackson Township PD is full time encrypted.

Point Pleasant Beach is encrypting more and more now. It's not always both sides of the conversation. Yesterday I noticed dispatch was in the clear, but some of the units were encrypted. I think it's a case of one end or the other switching to encryption and just forgetting or not bothering to switch back.

If you can budget the $500 or so, the new Uniden BCT996T looks wonderful...

If you're interested in the Uniden BCD996T (base model) or the BCD396T (hand held), I strongly recommend Communications Electronics Inc., located in Ann Arbor Michigan. They have the 996 and the 396 for $499.95, shipping included, which is an excellent price.
I purchased both my BC898T and my BCD396T from them and couldn't be happier with price and service. They ship via UPS and I had both of my units within 3 to 4 working days. I believe I got the 396 in 3 days. Here's their website:

http://www.usascan.com

Click on "Bearcat Scanners" in the "PRODUCTS" column on the left side of the page. For ordering information, click on "Click To Order", top right side of the page. You can order by phone, toll free. Just remember, they're in a different time zone than we are, an hour or two earlier.

Joe, welcome back to the Ocean County scanning scene. I agree with all the above posts, but I would invest in a digital scanner if your funds permit. Berkeley is testing their digital system currently, unknown on encryption level as of yet. Toms River and Jackson are a lost cause, just count them out of your listening habits. TR might give a day of dispatch in the clear, then back to the rest of the week totally encrypted. I might have read a while back Barnegat was looking into P25 in the APP, but vaguely remember and have heard nothing recently.

KC2GVX - You remembered correctly about Barnegat and digital. I was the one who posted the information I got from the FCC database site. The license for WNDD487, frequencies 460.025, 460.450, 465.275, 465.025, and 465.450 was modified on 12/28/05 for digitalized voice (possible encryption). They either canned the idea or haven't gotten around to upgrading yet because they still broadcast in the clear.

Is anyone able to hear Stafford anymore? Here in Toms River I haven't heard Stafford PD in years. I can pick up LEHT's P25 channels fine with my attic-mount antenna, and Burlco TRS, but NO Stafford. Anyone have the final word on what happened, and why they switched to the low power repeater?

It looks like their original 460.2750 MHz repeater died and they either switched their digital repeater on 460.0500 MHz to analog or got a new repeater and set it up for 460.0500 MHz. I've been hearing testing on 460.2750 MHz often.
