Hi all,

I'm looking for some guidance on programming my scanner with the Montana public safety frequencies listed on RadioReference. For some counties, there are up to six different frequencies listed. Could anyone advise on which of these frequencies should be prioritized for monitoring? Any insights into how these multiple frequencies are used (e.g., different talk groups, repeaters, etc.) would be greatly appreciated.

Would help if we knew what scanner you are using, and which counties you are wanting to program in. Frequencies will depend on if they are conventional or P25 type.

Are you speaking about the frequencies listed for this system?

Those frequencies are for the sites on a trunked system. You would program at a minimum the control frequencies for each site.

If it is for different systems, like for one or more specific counties, please specify which ones.

From the Radio Reference Database for the Montana State Trunked Radio system (MPSCS) add the frequencies in "red" for each of the following sites:
Belgian Hill
Santa Rita
MT. Royal
Highwood Baldy
Sullivan Hill
The frequencies in "red" are the control channels, they will find the other frequencies.
From the database for each of the counties you want to monitor, Glacier, Liberty, Pondera, and Toole enter the talkgroups (TGid).
After your done with the State Trunked system, in another bank add the conventional frequencies for those same counties.
I was in Shelby back in September for High School football game, I entered in those sites and TGids for those counties and heard some
traffic on them. I just wasn't there long enough to pick up lots of traffic.
Hope this helps out!

As I stated I was up there in September for HS football game. Programmed in all of those sites and Talkgroups for those same counties that the OP stated, I did receive transmissions for numerous talkgroups while in the area.
Just trying to give the OP some help.
Using SDS-100.

For Conventional frequencies.
The squelch should be ”search” this will make the program look for “PL tones (ctcss), DCS, NAC tones/codes”.
The mode should be “NFM” (narrow fm), this was changed several years ago.
Almost everything now is NFM, aviation/aircraft is AM.
