• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

The P1225 did not use a cable. It programmed thru the battery with the adapter shown above. I was able to make a few when I worked for the shop out of old chargers but not sure where the diagram went.

You are not going to find a $20 cable for a 1225 they worked with a Rib Box and DOS or Windows 95 SLOW PC you had to run software to slow pc,s down or it would not work. Do You have a 100 Meg Prosser pc?

Adding on I forgot to say I also have a older laptop, It's a Dell Inspiron 1200 and I am not sure but 1.3 mhz Celeron CPU if I recall but I would have to check, how slow exactly does it have to be?

DO NOT ASK ME FOR HELP PROGRAMMING YOUR RADIO. NO.
You are definitely in the realm of radio archaeology. If I had to try to source an old enough laptop to try to work with a 1225, I'd just say no and get on with my life. I'm kind of shocked that you can get replacement batteries for them.

Windows 95 has a minimum CPU requirement of a 386DX. It'll run on up to a Pentium 4 and with the appropriate patch can run on machines with a clock speed beyond 2.1 GHz.

But that doesn't say that the RSS will work correctly.

Try what you have, see if you can read the radio with it. If it reads with no data errors, it's probably safe to use to program the radio.

Alrighty I am currently getting a new hard drive for that laptop so I will probably put windows 95 or xp on it. I really love the old Motorola radios if I'm being honest and it helps that you can still get the batteries and what not for them. Motorola's new radios are good and all but I just want to have a little bit of the past. Thank you and I will keep you updated

So besides the programming stand above you need a RIB box. The DB 25 on the programming cable plugs into the RIB then to the PC 9 Pin Serial Port. Dont plan on a USB adapter as it most likely wont work.

I plan on buying the RIB box here soon, or hopefully find it at a upcoming ham fest. Yea I know to stay away from USBs but my laptop and desktop computer have a serial port

Version 4.0 of the CPS runs just fine on an XP computer. MOL still has it under Discontinued Software plus it’s easily found on the net. And it’s a Windows program, not a DOS executable.
Thank you, I had already put a version on my Windows XP desktop

For what it's worth, I did have success programming P1225s using a cable similar to this which incorporates the RIB circuity and provides a RS232 programming interface.

It was done on a 2008 Macbook running Parallels 11 w/ WinXP and a USB>Serial converter. Not a recommended setup by any stretch, but confirming that WinXP on a computer with a real serial port should be able to get it done.
