And I always recommend that folks get one upgrade at a time. The most popular is the DMR (unless you have a specific system in mind). This way, you can "see how it goes" before loading up the radio with a bunch of stuff. Run it for about a week or two and make sure that the radio is operating properly before getting the next.

DMR is a must have given the amount of users it has, just about everywhere in unlisted form, even random people using a pair of 'walkie talkies' for a specific job often are using DMR and haven't a clue what they're even using or if it requires a license or not...

Looking at your area, based on zip code, there are no noticeable public safety agencies using DMR, other than the jail in a nearby county. There are a number of business users, such as the Children's Hospital & the Goodyear plant in Akron. Several of the school districts are using NXDN or DMR, and there's a couple of DMR systems used by various companies and non-public safety agencies. That's only what is in the database. There could be more that never were submitted to the database, and of course one or more entities might, at some point, switch to DMR. Whether any of those shown interest you is your call. The Digital Frequency Search site can tell you who is licensed to use DMR (or NXDN), but that is no guarantee that they are currently using that mode, only that they have a license to do so.
