A good, inexpensive receiver is the Kaito KA1103 (under $90), and it does SSB. It tunes only in 1 KHz steps (except on the broadcast FM band). Some reviews of it are at Kaito KA1103 Product Reviews . I picked one up a few years ago to use while riding the bus to and from work... and would listen to radio Australia during the ride on it's telescoping antenna.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, it's always wise to read the reviews of various models before plunking down some cash. Our wiki has numerous links to reviews in the following...

HF Equipment and Accessories - The RadioReference Wiki

You might also consider visiting a hamfest (yes, it's that time of year again) and seeing what's floating around used. Many ham transceivers have built in general coverage receivers, and for things like COTHEN (where DEA and Coast Guard stations are often heard), military and other things, they will do a better job that a small portable.

We've had pretty extensive discussions about the 750 in this forum. Use the search tools to find the threads. It's not a bad radio, but it's not a real good radio to handle digital modes and the like. The sideband tuning isn't all that great, from what I've heard...it's doable, just not what it should or could have been.
