Let me start off by saying I love Uniden and have had nothing but good luck with them. I already have a BCD996XT, but I'm looking for another digital scanner. I see the BCD996P2 & BCD536HP. Comparing to what I currently have, what would I be gaining by purchasing one of these? Same antenna connections on the back as my 996xt?

Hey....you might want to try the HP2. For me this became love at first sight. Started out with the 996 then the 536 then the 396 and now the HP2.You will def like it. I have had nothing but good experience with Uniden and their customer service via telephone is good too. Don't really know what the complaints are none experienced here. Nothing but happy monitoring!

Stay away from the 436 and 536. Too many real issues.
No real support or answers when things will get fixed.

I had a 436, sold it at a discount. Bought a HP2, just starting to use it. So far, so good. Stay tuned.....

Thanks. I asked before I really started reading. I almost dropped some money earlier, but I figured I'd better read up first.

Don't understand why Uniden would release something with issues and not have a fix ready for it... oh well.

I will second the HP-2. Had one for a month, now. Great radio. If you buy one tho, do get a different antenna.

If your main systems of interest are 700/800MHz trunks, then use something on the line of the Radio Shack 800MHz antenna (though that exact one is hard to find right now). You would need to use the SMA->BNC adapter that comes with the scanner, as well as a 90 degree right angle elbow adapter, so that the antenna can be oriente3d vertically.

I've had good luck with the RH789. That's an extendable antenna; markings on the antenna itself give guidelines on how far to extend for various frequency ranges. I used that on my HP-1 during a month long 'vacation' in the hospital. Worked well for the variety of systems I have in DFW, everything from Vhf-high, to Uhf (Dallas PD/FD are mostly Uhf), and multiple 700/800MHz trunked systems. Using the elbow, plus the RH789, the antenna (which has a pivot at the base) can be folded down virtually flat on top of the scanner for easier carrying or packing. The SRH789 is the same thing, with an SMA instead of BNC, so no adapter needed, The pivot on the antenna itself lets you adjust it vertically. The 789 is what I use on my HP-2 when I'm taking a short regional trip, or in a different room other than my bedroom or home office. In those two locations, I have access to a rooftop antenna.

Another vote for the HP2.
I have a couple of them and an HP1.

Excellent radio, very readable display, national database, record/playback capable, good receive sensitivity.

No problems reported to date and not even one firmware update to fix a problem.

True. It does what it's supposed to, no issues. Plus, of course, the display is great.

Another vote here for the HP-2. Love it. Doubles as a base scanner while at home and a mobile with the GPS puck while in the car.

Simple terms, what is APCO-25 Phase I & II?

I have a 996 right now and see that the 996P2 comes with the phase 2. I like the setup and style of the 996, so thinking that might be the route I'd rather go. Plus it would fit in my holder, case thing that holds 3 scanners.

Just for S&G's, on the Home Patrol, does it actually input every freq once you put in your zip code? Can you choose then what to listen to like on groups and stuff?

APCO-25 aka P25. In other words it is the digital public safety standard in North America. Phase 1 originated back in the 90's and is based off of C4FM. Phase 2 is for the most part brand new and based off TDMA.

How would I know if there is any phase II in my area? I'm sure the Houston area might have it, but to know for sure, I don't.
