He's looking for a scanner that will cover the new 700Mhz band that many agencies are starting to use.

Since this is the Louisiana Forum, I suspect wmh225 is looking at the LWIN system: Louisiana Wireless Information Network (LWIN) Trunking System, Statewide, Louisiana - Scanner Frequencies

Current model scanners that will cover 700MHZ (and LWIN) include:

Handhelds:
Uniden BCD396XT
GRE PSR-500
Radio Shack Pro-106 (made for them by GRE; same as the PSR-500, other than the front panel arrangement, but comes without the pc cable and ac adapter that GRE includes with the 500).

Base/Mobile:
Uniden BCD996XT
GRE PSR-600
Radio Shack Pro-197 (made by GRE, same as the PSR-600, but does not come with the pc cable; that is included with the 600).

Also, the PSR-800 (made by GRE) and Uniden's Home Patrol 1 would work. These have the entire U.S. & Canada database loaded, and are programmed by either an iPod like menu system (PSR-800) or by using your city name or zip code (Home Patrol).

Previous Uniden models BCD396T & BCD996T would also work, but especially in the case of the 396, you'd be better off with the current version. You may find any of this scanners, from time to time, in the classifieds here, on eBay, or elsewhere, at a discount from new pricing.

New GRE & Uniden scanners are available from ScannerMaster, Grove, The Ham Station, and other online dealers. Radio Shack scanners, of course, can be found, or ordered, at your area store or online.

LWIN Encryption

I live in Lafayette Parish and a few months ago they switched to the LWIN system. However, they are encrypted. How does this fit into the intent of LWIN. Is the entire system encrypted? Is it worth replacing my old Pro-97 scanner if I can't scan for local transmissions?

Almost every talkgroup on LWIN outside of Lafayette Parish is not encrypted.

On this page, you'll see the mode on other talkgroups is "D" rather than "E."

If your interest in scanning is confined to Lafayette law enforcement, it wouldn't make much sense to buy a new scanner. I live in New Orleans and use a BCD396XT. It's an expensive scanner but I can pick up pretty much everything in the metro area.

Ruston LWIN Info

You have to pick the parish you live in and look under LWIN part of the page for your parish and you will know which scanner you need according to the police , fire and *.* listed on the page. Bossier Parish is totally Digital even the 154.000 MHZ systems. I think someone got sold a bill of goods. The top of this thread lists all scanners that will work in this area. Buy a good antenna otherwise it is all for nothing.allsmar1@att.net

Almost everything in my area around Baton Rouge is on LWIN. In your area you will probably be needing a scanner that will do the P24 LWIN system if you want to hear anything.

In both cases you'll want one of the digital scanners listed above since the LWIN system handles much of the desired traffic. Don't forget that a digital scanner simply adds the P-25 digital modes to what the lower end analog scanners cover so you can use that one scanner for both analog and digital modes.

Caddo Parish is mostly on an analog system, but most of Bossier Parish is on the LWIN system. To cover both parishes, you'll need a digital scanner.

Ruston has reportadly moved from their old conventional analog channels to the LWIN system for at least the PD. They're not listed in the database, but with some monitoring you can possibly help with their identification and submit them for listing. See this post (and surrounding ones) for details http://forums.radioreference.com/lo...on-network-lwin-discussion-8.html#post1774666

thanks for the responses i was afraid of them being digital which is over a $200 jump in price to buy one, but seems if thats the only way to hear them i guess it would be worth it, would hate to spen that much then it also be encrypted.
