Looks like this is simply MARCS radios for the SO’s cars. Found reference to this in the March County Commissioners’ report. There were several references to Phase 1 & 2. I speculate that Phase 1 was dispatch and supervisors, Phase 2 is patrol units.

They arn't so bad, I'm listening right now and am glad they still use conventional VHF high band. I set all the local communities freqs on an old scnner and keep the Uniden set to the MARCS towers, best of both worlds!

Will keep your fingers crossed, but encryption appears to be the latest trend popping up around here. Middleburg Hts. PD and Strongsville PD both have encrypted radios since they updated to digital.

Yeah, they don't want us listening to their meeting up at the donut shop. "Hey, look Zeke, did you see that terrorist hiding behind the telephone pole?" I can see encryption of survelliance channels but total encryption in these small city police radios is total abuse of taxpayer money. Little Demigod police chiefs.

And just wait until some dimwit's radio is either lost or stolen, or leaves the battery off long enough for the encryption key to be erased. Then all the radios (the entire fleet) have to be rekeyed. They don't think about that little wrinkle.

Even with over-the-air-rekeying (OTAR), encryption key management is a pain in the butt.

That being said, there is no guarantee they'll go with encryption; it does cost quite a bit of extra money, and I suspect the preference in smaller departments would be to get new radios into everyone's hands rather than a few with encryption.

Wait and see....

more food for thought

There is talk of Elyria, Lorain And the Lorain County Sheriff becoming a regionalized police force , so if the county gets new equipment before this happens i wonder if Lorain and Elyria will purchase equipment to join there system, i know Elyria is crying so broke they cant afford Police Officers much less new radio equipment. I guess the fist step is to consolidate Dispatching of the 3 departments. This is going to be interesting , and probably not good for the scanner listener.

Lorain City Digital System

Has anyone seen any information on the new system in Lorain Ohio? Could it be part of the Sheriff's new system? They are still on analog but no longer using their repeater.

The new system for the Lorain County Sheriff's Department is NOT planned to be on the MARCS network according to one of the Deputies whom is my friend. As for Lorain, they will not be on the same digital network with the Sheriff's Department & their going to digital is speculative at this time due to possible structural & terrain issues with implementing the system (according to several members of the LPD I know). Elyria has no plans in the immediate future to change or upgrade it's existing radio systems.
