A Miami County Sheriff’s deputy recently found himself on a communications island in the middle of the night while responding to a report of suspicious activity on the west side of the county.
At 2:16 a.m. June 7 the deputy located suspicious vehicles at the intersection of 287th Street and Pleasant Valley Road – and communication with dispatch abruptly ceased.
“The deputy started yelling, ‘Get back in the vehicle’ and radio was then cut off,” 911 dispatch center Communications Supervisor Allison Ray wrote in a follow-up report. “Dispatch had units upgrade to assist and dispatch tried to check on units multiple times with no answer.”

I don't know why these politicians wait until something bad happens to replace these antiquated communications systems. When the new EMS system was planned it all should have been addressed and combined then. It sure would have been a lot cheaper.

Miami county does have assigned talk groups on KSCIS. Should be easy to move over to that system. Not sure the coverage in that county, they may have to fund one or two new repeaters, similar to what Franklin County did.

You don't simply add one or two repeaters, you add sites, consisting of networking, several repeaters, UPS, etc. Franklin County has 5 sites. I'm sure that is all a money thing. It's much cheaper to continue using these systems rather than spending millions on new infrastructure and radios. We are in the same boat here, other than our system works well and we have no KSICS towers in our county.

Going from VHF to 800 takes about 4 to 7 more stations to provide the same coverage. Fixing the VHF would be cheaper, but I am sure Mother M is right in there pushing the 800, as there is more recuring revenue than just replacing with new VHF equipment.
What recurring revenue are you talking about?

Everything is now a license to use, updates, core programming, even having certain options in the radio requires a license from mother M. Just look at any Turbo system operator, and see how many recurring licenses for software packages they have.

According tp PSP Pa's failed 800 MHz system is being dismantled --it took more than a thousand towers-and mini repeaters to try and make the system play. The NEW VHF system will take a few hundred supporting structures

Some states are finaly realizing this, as Virginia, Maine, New Hampshire, Alaska, etc. Made the statement 10 years ago that 800 is not for in the woods, a multiband radio with VHF, or UHF and 700/800 is the preffered way to build out a large statewide system. City areas on 700/800 with UHF and VHF in the outlying area.

The operative word in that post is "politicians." They don't have a clue.

PAOLA — Miami County Commissioners are poised to consider purchasing a $6.8 million 800 megahertz radio system from Motorola to replace a VHF radio system that has caused heartburn for many first responders, dispatchers and other county officials.

The conditions of the VHF system had deteriorated to the point where the County Commission declared a state of emergency Aug. 14 in order to seek immediate assistance.

That's not all that uncommon with VHF systems. Most have been around for many years. Locally, I can remember some "dead" spots in town where officers could not receive at all and these were areas where you really, really wanted some communications. The 800 mHz system solved that problem.

PAOLA — Miami County commissioners made it clear that when it comes to public safety, having reliable communications is essential.

Commissioners voted 5-0 Wednesday, Oct. 30, to purchase an 800 megahertz radio system from Motorola to replace a dysfunctional VHF radio system that has caused nothing but headaches for dispatchers and first responders across the county. The cost of the system, site development for the towers and a $500,000 contingency reserve brings the total to about $8 million.

Glad to see MiCo finally making progress on upgrading their system. It's long overdue!

Here's to hoping they'll tie into KSICS and being able to hear them from the Johnson Co tower. :)

There is a Miami county talk group on MARRS, says fire/ems dispatch. They may just hook into that system, however Miami County Sheriff already has some KSICS mobiles.
