The President of my REACT Team (
http://www.selareact.org ) , Matt Anderson, KD5KNZ, has been working with the LASTA installing a Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS) on the train. This from the Yahoo Group LA_APRS -
"The Louisiana Steam Train Association (LASTA) has been working to restore the SP 745, a steam engine that was built in 1922. The group is planning a state-wide run from March 29 to May 4, 2005. The train will start its tour in New Orleans and make several stops in Louisiana and Mississippi.
LASTA is interested in having amateur radio operators and clubs set-up at each of the planned stops to provide information on railroad communications as well as amateur radio. We will be tracking the train's progress with APRS using the network established in many of our major cities. The APRS beacon will operate with the call sign of SP745. As you may know, there are several areas around the state with poor or no APRS coverage. We particularly need help in the following areas: Morgan City, Lake Charles, De Quincy, Leesville, Delhi, and Hammond.
We invite everyone that may be interested in planning and/or volunteering for this event to join our new group for more information.
