Someone make this into a submission.... I'll add them as "Temporary" or something so when the system goes operational we can make sense of it.... send them to me today and sometime tonight or early tomorrow I'll add them.....
Do the freqs in use look correct?

I really don,t think it would do any good to add them to the database just yet.
none seem permanent, believe they are still testing..
but as I see a new TG appear, I add it to my "saved" TGs in the library.

Just my .02 cents

So much of the stuff that is on-going is merely testing stuff. What is valid Tuesday may be invalid Wednesday, and completely different on Thursday.

So my suggestion is to just let things ride for a while.

By way of a progress report:

The tower site construction is nearing completion. The next step will be microwave path optimization.

Construction at the new MetroSafe location is nearing completion. They hope to re-locate the telecommunicators from their current location to the new center by Derby Day.

Some 30 pallets of radio equipment have been delivered. The radio shop folks will be inventorying the new equipment for however long it takes to inventory 4,000 radios. Then comes programming.

Supposedly, and this is all owing to how smooth things go and the absence of nasty surprises, the new radio system should be in full use by summer's end.

Still are brainstorming talk groups.

Won't be as long as it has been.

Cool... so I take Derby and Thunder will be (limited) testing time?

Yeah, but think of how many more "channels" you'll get to play on and monitor.
And we're still working on the identifying RCS system talkgroups.

Oh well, I like a challenge...

Do you mean ALL dept's will be using the new system "by summer's end" or are you just talking about LMPD?

The current thought is to have the public service folks, such as public works, be the first ones on the new system. On the surface it sounds backwards, but the more thinking you do, it makes really great sense. That way any problems or poor areas will be discovered by non-emergency folks where the outcome isn't precarious. So I'd bet a few bucks we'll be hearing most of the current local government radio system users (other than the airport) on the new system by Derby Day, if not well before.

I'm sure there will be others using it, but nothing of great significance. Most likely those you heard during previous Derby deals.

Dan - the papers I've seen show 55 portables and 65 mobiles for JPD. I do not know whether that means they got ordered. If MetroSafe committed them to you previously, then that might happen.

Giving credit where credit is due, and calling an ace an ace and a spade a spade: I was really sweating bullets that metro would say "Well, we promised buying you fire folks new radios, but when we said that, no one knew that the economy would fall, and we got this bad budget deficit. So I'm sorry, metro won't be able to buy suburban fire their radios." But, that did NOT get said and the mayor made good on his promise. One can say what they want about our metro mayor, but he took care of suburban fire.

Yeah it took twice as long as originally thought. No government anywhere is known for speed on anything but collecting taxes.

I heard from the horse's mouth Thursday evening that all, as in everyone and not just LMPD, would be up and running by the end of summer. However, unforseen stuff happens.

All I can say is when things go wrong, that's where I come in. I carry a fire hose. (Sorry Joe Friday).

Are they going to immediately stop using the current system when the new one is up and running or will it be a simulcast situation for a while?

I find it a little hard to believe that they are going to have 5000+ radios programmed and installed by the end of summer.

The specific transition plan is being worked on. I imagine there will be some interface time where radio users can learn the operation of the new equipment.

It's as many as 4,000 radios, not 5,000. Since a lot of that will be cloning, it may not take a whole lot of time.

As far as the above. I have worked with some of the guys doing the radio work and they are absolutely top notch. They very rarely make promises(not saying they did in this case) that they don't keep.

Since Motorola is the contractor for towers, radios and infrastructure, the radios may come from the "factory" pre-programmed. That way if anything needs to be changed, it would be minor tweaking.

Thanks for the info Chief. Hope that is close to being right about what we get.

Can't wait to get the new system up and running, should be fun.

Hey Guys,
This is what I have heard about the new radio system. They are going to start issuing the radios to the Public Service folks to use and do the testing of the system and that may start by the end of summer but they haven't finished creating all of the Talkgroups yet. That means they can't start programming them until that is finished.

As far as the Comm. Center move goes it will be AFTER Derby. The target time is mid June but EMA and the EOC will be moved well before that so that the construction crews can finish the work in the area that they are currently occupying. That, hopefully will be mid March but there is a LOT of work to be done before then. I've got to get all of the information together to be sure that we have their phones installed in the EOC and in all of their offices. That isn't even talking about all of the added electrical power, UPS's and Generator's that need to be finished. You would be amazed at how much power has been added to the building because everything is redundant!! I keep meaning to get pictures of the new place because it is something else. I'll check back here every once in a while to update you guys when I find things out.

Until next time, take care,
Thanks Dan

I know this is a loaded questions but I only get 1 bar on my Pro-197 now. I currently get 4-5 bars with their vhf/uhf. Will the new towers have better height and range? What are they using for testing, tower wise?

I am afraid I will not hear them after the change over.

If I'm not mistaken the higher the frequency the shorter the travel of the signal so that would explain the lower signal in Scottsburg. All of the towers, well almost all of the sites are up and running and I doubt the signal will get any better up there. It may be time to double check your antenna location.

What you are getting is probably going to remain the same...

But the transmitter site that covers Southern Indiana is downtown. But that has new radio and antenna and has already been upgraded. There maybe some tweaking involved once the system fully comes on-line.
And several transmitters will be spread through Jefferson County. I don't know how many are actually on-line.

UHF/VHF travels farther in free space, height, power, location being equal.

Funding I believe was a major issue. Plus just the logistical things such as putting towers, money, getting the building ready, money and everything else that comes with such a huge undertaking....money....

Plus Dan's salary is what put the city in a financial bind...That and his take home car...lol...

According to this, it should have been done 5.5 years ago??????? What is the hold up not stated in this?

Bob

Politics... funding, etc, pick one...
Google it, there are other articles and news accounts about the whole thing.

Progress!!

Hey Guys,
I took a couple pictures when I was down at the New MetroSafe and posted two of them on here. Sorry they are dark but they just turned the main power on to the building on Thursday, LG&E said something about being behind because they had some customers that were out of power, beats me! I will be adding more pictures as the work continues down there.

Motorola has the equipment installed in the Comm. Center as of last Thursday but will have to come back to finish some of the wiring. We will be installing almost 300 PC Monitors and running cables on all of those arms you see on the desks starting Monday. That only leaves installing the Positron PC based phone Workstations at 50 positions along with the 50 standard workstation PC's, 50 CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) Workstations, 12 Moto Bridge PC's and about 10 NCIC PC's. That doesn't count the E.O.C. PC's and the Offices and the Detail Room PC's. But before we can install the PC's you have to build the images for them and load all of the needed software on them. It's a good thing we have a good crew because that is a lot of work to do but I know we will get it done.

Oh by the way the Guys from Motorola advised that they will be working in the Main CEB Room starting Monday installing the main radio system. Boy do they have there work cut out for them. I'll hit them tomorrow with the camera while they're working I'm sure they will love that. Thats enough for now I'll update again later.

73's, Dan
