all those new Talkgroups I logged were encrypted.

nothing i in the clear at all.. in that number range anyway..

heard some 1600's in the clear this morning, did not enter them in the memory yet, want to see how active they are first...

51 and 52 are definitely not encrypted...53 and 54 are for sure....St Matthews hasn't switched over yet and not 100% sure that Shively has or not. I know the other day their dispatcher was working off simplex on their primary channel and I was unable to hear the units.

Entering ALL the Metrosafe frequencies and turning off "control channel only" has enabled me to receive MetroSafe very clearly up here in Sellersburg, IN with a BCD396T. Good clean audio, strong signal, 5 by 5 as they used to say.

Thanks to whoever posted that tip!

Sellersburg should pick it up nicely without all of the heterodyne that we experience in Louisville, you have one tower coming in pretty strong from Utica.

On a side note, Greenville is about the cutoff on 150.

It's my understanding that the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office will be going to a MotoTRBO system. Supposedly it will be cheaper for them in the long run to install a whole new system than paying the recurring costs of joining the Metrosafe system. So much for interoperability...

Are you sure JCSO? I thought JCPS was going MotoTRBO?

This is per Radioland. I don't know anything about JCPS. I read the article about them getting new radios for the buses. Maybe them and the SO are going in on it together.

The CJ article said JCPS would be using "digital radios", exactly what the JCPS or CJ's definition of a digital radio is I don't know. Kinda like when they say "assault rifle".

I would find it hard to believe that installing a completely new system would be cheaper than the "recurring" charges on the Metro system. So you are going to waste money in order to save money? Doesn't appear to be a sound financial decision.

But then again, the sheriffs office is also speaking out about Meth Labs in Jefferson County and the effects of legislation about controlling medications used to make Meth. They are butting heads with LMPD who run the Meth Team. The JCSO respond and find so many Meth Labs....NOT!!!

This certainly doesn't make a lot of sense for a lot of reasons. Just goes to show that the sheriff's department is really not a necessary part of metro gov't. Where did you hear this information?

This may be dumb, but can someone tell me what the logic is in encrypting EMS? I can understand some TAC and maybe stakeout type stuff -- but why ems???

Thanks... Mike T

The desire to to provide folks who need EMS with a reasonable degree of privacy.

Pertinent medical history is included in the dispatch information. Most folks would rather that information not be available to anyone with a scanner, particularly that nosy busybody neighbor they got who likes to gossip. I can just see her now talking over the fence and saying: "Did you hear that so and so has a history of alcoholism . . ."

Google HIPAA Act

It really doesn't apply. The real answer as to why they do it is "because they can." The majority of EMS agencies do not encrypt their communications. However, I'm not really opposed to it. I'd rather see the primary dispatch channels in the clear with some secondary channels encrypted that they could switch to for sensitive information. Maybe encrypt the hospital channels as well.
