SWAT arrests man in murder case
Loveland resident suspected in 1978 California death

A Loveland man was arrested Wednesday by the city's SWAT team in connection with a 28-year-old murder investigation in California.
According to a statement from the Loveland Police Department, Scott Brian Schultz, 45, is under investigation for the death of a 16-year-old girl whose body was discovered in the Santa Cruz hills near a property owned by his uncle. Palo Alto Online News identified the girl as Laura Beyerly of Los Altos, Calif., a sophomore at Los Altos High School.

Beyerly was reportedly last seen March 28, 1978, after her first period physics class. Her body was discovered a year later.
She was wearing a flowered black shirt, black pants and brown platform shoes, according to reports in the Los Altos Town Crier. After class, witnesses told police they noticed her talking to her ex-boyfriend, Scott Schultz, in the school parking lot. She had stayed up all night arguing with him, according to her mother's statement. And then she was never seen alive again, the Town Crier reported.
Police were unable to identify a suspect during the initial investigation, but were led to Schultz after the case was reopened in October.
Police said Schultz has lived in Loveland since 1990.
The Loveland Police Department has been working with Detective Brad Templeman and investigator Michael Schembri of the Santa Clara County (Calif.) District Attorney's Office since December.
He was arrested at his residence, 1124 W. Eisenhower Blvd., near Lake Loveland, just after 11 a.m.
Neighbors were shocked to hear Schultz was suspected in the death of the young woman and said they hadn't noticed the arrest earlier in the day.

Pat Lehocky, Schultz’s next door neighbor, said Schultz and a woman had just bought the home on Eisenhower Boulevard and moved in less than two months ago. It’s unclear the relationship Schultz and the woman have.

Lehocky said she had talked with Schultz a few times and that she knew very little about him, except that he mentioned having grandchildren.

“He seemed like a real friendly man,” she said.

There were several people at the Schultz residence Wednesday evening, but they declined to comment on the arrest.

A Colorado Bureau of Investigations background check showed Schultz has no criminal record in the state.

Schultz is in custody in Larimer County Jail and will be extradited to California “in the near future,” said the statement.

I had often wondered what happanded to Officer Templeman on the radio. I spoke to him on many occasions before. Now I know why, he's a Detective. :)
