low band opening this afternoon

There is a good sporadic E opening right now.

I'm hearing VHF low band stations in MO, IL, IN, OH, TN and
worked several stations on 6m.
Some of the MO HP and IL SP mobiles are very strong here in the DFW area.

Yup, as I'm typing I'm hearing 42.640 (Troop F Dispatch-Missouri Highway Patrol), 42.600, and many others from California.

The only FDs I can think of (off the top of my head) on 33.900 is Hamilton County (Cincinnati) area. FDs on 33.980 in Ohio is all over.

No joy on the PL tone or DCS, was copying it on 2 separate radios, though neither one had PL capability...
Reflecting back, though, the dispatcher I heard had a sort of "Chicago" accent...

Mississippi uses several of the 42 & 45 MHz freqs.
44.70 is either OK HP or IL SP Collinsville and probably other states too.
MO HP has a lot of new 42 MHz freqs in the past year.

Just heard fire stuff on 39.98 and 33.78. Also picking up lots of other stuff, including 37.18, 39.84, 39.9, 42.34, 45.22. I Heard someone mention Hillsborough. Also on one of them I heard a dispatcher advising of a tornado watch. Pretty cool how I can hear stuff across the country.

For sure, the dispatch on 42.920 wasn't CHP since the CHP doesn't have "Troops". I haven't heard any low band skip out here in California, even Cincinnati OH Fire on 33.900, which usually comes booming in when there's a band opening. I know that Cincinnati is switching over to the Hamilton County trunk system so I hope the frequency hasn't died since it was always my "canary in the coal mine" for skip.

Is is 33.98 or 33.90? 33.90 is the one I've always heard before and it was the active frequency when I was was back in Cincinnati in late March.

Ahh E Skip is great! I'll have to tune around and see if I hear anything.
I remember a few years ago driving through Texas and listening to San Diego and El Cajon CHP repeaters. I've also heard them from northern Nevada and Utah during the summer.

Propagation has also been nice on VHF/UHF and 800 here in SoCal. Last night I heard Orange Country and Riverside TRS from my location in El Cajon, CA. Also Long Beach PD, LASD, LAPD, Riverside PD, Simi Valley PD and other LE traffic coming in last night.

For Hamilton County, Ohio it is 33.900 and is still very much active. Probably will be for some time since tones aren't reproduced well on a digital system.

Thanks for that. I may have gotten Cincinnati FD confused with Hamiltion County FD so that may be the reason for the frequency difference. For some reason, Hamiltion County FD on 33.90 always seems to come in the best of all the low band frequencies when there's a band opening. I was sitting on the beach on an offshore atoll in Belize a few years ago listening to Hamilton County FD with just the standard rubber duck on my Pro-92.
