thats one of the problems with low band, the band can go long and you can hear a signal 200 or more miles away and not be able to pick it up 20 miles away. Several years ago I was the disaster chairman for a red cross chapter in florida. we were working a fire in a hotel that burned out over 100 people that we were trying to get placed. we got a teletype from seattle, washington asking if we would cut back on the radio traffic, as our mobiles were blocking even the base station in seattle some 3,000 miles away. we never heard them, but they said mobiles and base was coming in much louder than their own radios. this was on 47.42 simplex and their vehicles could hear our mobiles.
