I have posted this in the Radio Shack forum as well…
My upgraded pro-18 (Whistler ws1080) will go through startup, and then will show “Low Battery. Auto shutdown” and turn off. USB power input does not work. I have tried with batteries and fake battery power supply and get the same result. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

If using rechargeables, is battery switch set to NMH? Are you sure your AC adapter is OK? I would try another one. That is a common problem with bad AC adapters.

It sounds like the radio won’t power up using either USB power or batteries — is that correct?

Can you clarify what you mean by “USB input does not work”? What exactly did you try to determine that?

Just to make sure the basics are covered, have you tried:
  • Multiple USB power sources (wall adapter, computer, etc.)
  • A higher-current USB supply (around 1A or more)
  • Multiple known-good USB cables
  • Multiple sets of fully charged batteries
Also, try powering the radio from USB with no batteries installed, if you haven’t already.

The usb input jack on the side of the radio does not work. It was damaged when the scanner took a tumble while plugged in, after that the unit worked with batteries as well as battery eliminator but now does not.

USB adapter 5v 500ma
Is it the same adapter you use for the USB connector on the scanner?
Once again, are you plugging the battery eliminator into the same USB adapter that you used before the USB port on the scanner was damaged? Does it work now with a good set of batteries? If it does, the USB adapter is bad.

Several different USB adapters have been tried as well as different sets of batteries.

I did just give it another try plugging usb directly into outlet on a plugstrrip and got as far as the input date time screen. After inputing information it went to list of option s and I selected the first choice "Scan" and it shuts off with no warning.

I'm wondering if the firmware has been corrupted. If you have a card slot on your computer, try this: Download this CPU updater:
That is the updater used with legacy scanners. Use it only if you have the official Whistler upgrade. Remove the SD card from your scanner and place it in your computer card slot. You will probably need an adapter for the micro SD card. Run the CPU updater.

You mentioned that the radio took a tumble, damaging the USB connector. Have you disassemble the radio to determine if any of the power related traces / connections have been damaged?

Depending on how a radio hits the ground, it can crack the circuit board. It needs to be disassembled to determine the extent of the damage. I don't know if the policy still exists, but with Whistler, having the official upgrade made the scanner eligible to be serviced by Whistler.

Sending it in to be repaired would be nice I'm sure. I just assumed it was long our of warranty. As you spelled out, a cracked PC board is what I'm thinking is causing the OP's woes.
