LPE-200 purchase

Before I go and waste my money on one of these radios, I wanna be sure of a few things. I have read several of the posts here and am a little confused.

One, I can purchase a radio and monitor APD/ AFD? I have no interest in transmitting, so I have no worries of having my radio being 'locked out'?

Two, programming software is 'fairly' easily found and user friendly so I can program the unit without having to have a professional do it?

Three, are the talk groups the same for the radio as they are for the scanner...or do I have some homework to do before programming?

If you do get a radio, make sure is has the option "29" installed to do provoice. The only way the city can disable your radio is if they know your LID. Don't X-Mit! Programming is easy, but you have to know how to set up the edacs personality in the programmer software. Yes, the talkgroups are the same as the scanner.

Will they work right out of the box? I know with this last class of recruits, many of their handhelds weren't working at all until we allowed their LID in the system. Not sure if they were brand new radios or old ones which had been locked out while in storage.

The radios won't work right out of the box. They are just like any other radio, they must be programed to work. Your right on the radios not being able to transmit on the system until the LID is entered into the system. But a LID is not needed to monitor the system.

Ah, that makes sense. I don't have much experience at all (except for just talking on one once) with these radios, but it sounds like it would be good to have since all I'd want to do is listen. Thanks! Now just have to figure out how to talk the wife into letting me get one. ;-)

Good luck on finding a Orion....I've been watching for a while and have only seen 1 or 2 pop up and were going for $1200. You can find provoice LPE's for $800-$1000...even on Ebay.


On another note......anyone catch that natural gas explosion behind the Frontier yesterday? That was interesting to listen to.

The "Options" enabling...namely option 29 for Provoice (LPE-200)...is that something that can be enabled by myself through the programming software or is that something that can only be done by a MA/COM tech. Just asking because I have seen LPE-200's for less then $500 but option 29 is NOT enabled on these portables.

enabling has to be done by a dealer. Also the "provoice" chip must be installed into the radio.

Has to be a 1Meg radio. 512K radios cant upgrade to Pro voice
