Good luck

One thing you should know about the radio is

Built-in Security
Should an LPE-200 be lost or stolen, the radio can be enabled or
disabled through a System Manager. This ability helps prevent
unauthorized monitoring of your critical communications system.

(snipped from an LPE website)

Spend your money wisely.

How much money are you prepared to spend? I don't know the exact price they pay but it is $1000's new. Programming one of these is not like programming a scanner because it needs special software and cable.

I don't believe you are going to find a radio that just happens to be programmed with police talkgroups just floating around legitimately. Anything else is outside of my bounds of discussion.

Anyway, John H. or someone else in Ottawa is supposed to stream OPS online from some Provoice radio...I'm waiting.

A quick check on eBay shows several LPE-200s for $350US or so, but it must be ProVoice enabled (Option 29). One of them is. So it might be had for $400-$500CDN. That would still leave the programming. There are other EDACS radios e.g. Orion which are ProVoice capable. I am not the expert on this.

There is also the matter of encryption. Etrunk, last I heard, does not give correct indication of which TGs are encrypted but I imagine some are. Regular dispatch is probably not. There is no legit way around this.

Anyway, I'm not set against someone doing this (monitoring without compromising the system ) I just don't see how it can be done above-board.

Lastly, if I had a Provoice-capable receiver I wouldn't want it to be public knowledge, if only that the criminal element would find these devices a useful tool in their trade and looking for sources.

I would stay away from doing this. If they're that secure of a radio system then I'd leave it up to the coppers themselves to stream it for the general public in and around Ottawa. More like something you'd wanna see (or hear) on the City of Ottawa website.

Good luck in finding one of those radio's. They don't come by too easy unless you know someone within the police service themselves.

I don't think that this'd last long until IC would send him a nice letter. A third party cannot forward any info heard off the air without the express permission of the transmitter. That's why we never really had any equivalents to the old policeradio web site up here. And what do you think the chances of the City actually streaming their police comms? :?

Dan,

That was an ironic comment...not holding my breath. I'd been listening to OPD since around 1970 (when they were on 155MHz, 2 system generations ago) and pretty much accepted in 1998 that I could no longer hear them. Fortunately OPP seems to have struck a balance between clear and encrypted, although I don't have digital means.

Comments appreaciated although I hope it doesn't expand into one of those off-topic things where the admins have to step in. I also doubt you'd find a PD streaming itself on the web (may be an exception out there but it seems to go against logic).

Last point, for anyone thinking of buying an LPE-200 or any other radio over eBay, someone on this site has recently warned about stolen units. Whatever you buy, be cautious.

Also, there was a recent discussion about people mis-representing options installed on these radios. lots of E-Bay radios were being represented as ProVoice-enabled, when option 29 wasn't even installed...
