• Effective immediately we will be deleting, without notice, any negative threads or posts that deal with the use of encryption and streaming of scanner audio.

We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. It's now worn out and continues to be the same recycled rants. These rants hijack the threads and derail the conversation. They no longer have a place anywhere on this forum other than in the designated threads in the Rants forum in the Tavern.

Hey. I was talking to a few LPD officers and they advised me that there is a Encrypted VICE channel that Lynchburg uses. Obviously, since it's encrypted, I cant hear it. How exactly does an encrypted talkgroup on an EDACS system work? Would I hear the transmissions if i listened to the frequenices using convential mode (not trunking the EDACS freqs)? Just kinda a "just wondering" technical question.

I would think they would still show up in something like ETrunker and could still be heard in conventional mode on the scanner. Of course, all you would hear is digital noise which would just sound like static.

For what it is worth, our Vice/TRT have encryption capability on our Motorola system but never use it. They don't like the extra delay before the radios sync and also don't like any extra beep noises. Primarily they do a lot of communicating on Nextel which is digital so somewhat encrypted by it's very nature.
