If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Only way to figure it out is to get it hooked up up as per normal (control head and everything), power it on, and go through the menu to the Features area and read off the feature numbers. There's nothing on the outside of the radio itself which will give you the features.

Because the features in these radios can only be activated via a key received from Harris, they keep a record of that, but you have to go through them to get the information. They'll have a record of what was in it when shipped, and what's been added since then.

Unless you read off the features from the control head, or go through Harris, you're pretty much out of luck.

Either that or find someone who has access to the harris FEW tool online who can search what features that ESN was purchased or upgraded with. and its never entirely accurate anyways.

These radios can have features added by someone other than Harris, so the best way is going to the radio menu and looking at features as wa8pyr mentioned. Whatever the control head reads out is what is in the radio.

Wish I knew that someone else could do add features; all the years I was working on Harris radios before I retired, I always had to go through Harris via our local dealer.

Probably would have cost the same anyway, but anything that would have sped up the process...

I hear it can be done very cheap and its one reason used XG-100s are popular. Not so much with the older models.

The radio has to be re-programmed so that the "menu" button actually accesses the menu, and the menu includes the "feature" options. Before buying Harris radios on Fleabay, Facebook Marketplace etc., insist the seller show you a screenshot of the feature codes. There's a fair number of people selling Harris Radios (such as EDACS era 7/800 bricks for like $800) that also sell tents and video games and cameras, that have zero clue what they are selling.

I've always wondered who is still actually buying EDACS only or Brokenskey 7/800 radio bricks, they are less than worthless but apparently some people are still somehow finding buyers...

The junk dealers just do a quick google search and learn what the radios are capable of with no idea that those are flashed in features. They just list them and go from there. Sometimes you can find a gem, most time not.

We still have a multi county EDACS system that is ProVoice and Analog where I live that is used by a few Law Enforcement agencies and a few tow truck companies.
