Wow!!

That should really stimulate something but will it help the economy??

My great grand kids are going to have to pay for it so I hope it lasts.

I'm sure the equipment is needed however, what ever happen to doing more with less. The federal government just keeps handing out the $$.

Making Money

Gotta admit, Hoser, we could make some money off of this entire government handout:
We should get together and devise a system where the PSAP can monitor all their first responder’s blood pressure and heart rate in real time.
Install Bluetooth sensors on their bodies that will be received by their vehicles radio, that will uplink the information to a geosynchronous satellite, and downlink to the PSAP. The satellite itself, along with all the transducers, monitors, sensors, transponders and associate hardware, software and antennas would surely be less than a couple billion for the whole system.

Although the above is tongue in cheek, the sad thing is that if someone actually did start trying to sell such a system like that, some agency somewhere would actually get a grant to buy it.

Reading the article, if you got any say in how the money is spent, try to talk the agencies into buying the newer video systems that write the data to flash memory, and download the info over the air from the unit to a DVR in the station. No more having to go into the trunk anymore at the end of each shift.

And get some decent batteries for the handhelds. Invest in some Lion's. No more Nicads or NiMH.
They will last four times as long for less than twice the price.

And when you move a radio from one vehicle to another, have a radio shop do the work, not the DPW. The DPW crimps connectors to coax with channel locks, not the proper tool. Don't laugh, I've seen 'em do it. A little extra money spent during installs will save many a radio from blowing it's finals.

We have AWESOME video's in the cars. It's the best around in our area.

DPW pffft.. Macomb Radio does them all :) they do a great job.

Motorola's Impress batteries are CRAP! They don't last near as long as a regular battery and the whole battery has to be below 30% is a PITA. Half the time you grab a prep it dies in a matter of hours and when you key it, it will give you the beep beep beep after you unkey it. *Not the preemptive Beep*.

I do know a DPW that does work (in my county) and the work is horrendous at best. Cars have been lost, radios junked but no one seems to care as to who does it and the like. I know a lot of cars spend time in for repairs becuase of the person that does it.

We are pretty well managed with how the budget is handled so I can't complain in anyway at all. Our dispatcher stays on top of the radio situation, he knows his stuff more so then I do so if it's down it gets fixed next day w/o having to wait for it.
