Madill PD and Marshall County Sheriff Not Being Heard on the Marshall County Sheriff’s Talkgroup

I recently got a 436HP digital scanner and have programmed in everything in my area around Madill and Marshall County. I am having trouble hearing Madill PD and units talking though on the Marshall County Sherrif’s talk group, TGID 549. I can hear only MCEMS and Madill FD on the analog channel for the county. I was wondering if anyone knows a way for me to try and be able to hear the PD on my new digital scanner? I have programmed in the Tishomingo and Ardmore sites since those are listed under the OKWIN database. Is there a site in Madill I need to program in that might make it where my scanner could pick up the PD or is it something else I’m doing wrong? Thanks in advance for the help, and also I am fairly new to digital scanning.

It looks like Tishomingo is the only site covering your area so you might try and lock out Ardmore. You can also lock out Tishomingo (with Ardmore still on) and see what kind of signal strength your getting (if any) from Ardmore. Are you getting any traffic on 549 but just can't make it out, or not getting anything at all. Set you scanner to ID Search vs Scan and see what or if any traffic shows up. Since RR is user based submissions, someone might have submitted the wrong TGID for MCSO.

I can get traffic on 549, but not much. It’s a lot of bits and pieces. I live in town near where most of the local PD units are and still don’t get any luck. I’ve drove out in the rural part of the county a few times this last week though and can get more clearer traffic that way. And yes, I think most of the signal is coming from the Tishomingo site. I haven’t tried programming with Sentinel yet, but I’m not sure if there is something it could do that I can’t do by manually hand programming the scanner. Is it something to do with my antenna? I have a Diamond RH77CA and it does everything else in my area really good.

So when your getting the bits and pieces, are you indoors, at Home/Work? since you said you received good out in the field in could be loss of signal by being indoors. You might try using the original antenna and see if that works any better or you might have to get an outdoor antenna.

Yeah I’m indoors when I get bits and pieces. I probably do need to get an outdoor antenna.

There are several scanner antennas that can be purchased at Scanner Master. If you are using the stock antenna, I strongly recommend buying the following SMA antenna. I have monitored the IH35/IH44 corridor. Basically, it works well.

For the most part, I use this antenna with a SDS 100 in the vehicle while rolling. Hence, I hear quite a bit driving. I am certain the SDS 100 radio helps a lot.

An outside antenna might be in order for your ride. At home, you might consider making a dipole antenna. There are plans on You Tube. Some folks like a commercially made version.

Amazon.com: Bingfu Police Radio Scanner Dipole Antenna 20-1300MHz Adhesive Mount BNC Male, Vehicle Mobile Ham Amateur Antenna Compatible with Uniden Bearcat Whistler Radio Shack Scanner : Electronics

SMA VHF/UHF/800 MHz REM-842S REMTRONIX Triband antenna | Scanner Master

I don't know if OKWIN P25 is being installed along this route.

I never travel on the route through Muskogee. Even "My Place" BBQ won't lure me there.

Thanks for the information. So, I am assuming the 800mhz antenna from scanner master you recommended because it would be better at picking up the control channels? I’m just curious about what the difference between it and the Diamond RH77CA? I also could try the other antenna you linked from Amazon. Both seam reasonably priced.

Yes, I would argue that the reception of the control channels is improved over the stock antenna.

The 436HP & SDS 100 suck on analog. However, conventional digital frequencies are better than I expected.

I hate the Diamond I bought. It was SMA. It was annoying because the base kept revolving. Furthermore, it was a very loose fit, sloppy as far as I am concerned,

I still have it somewhere in the house.

When I was monitoring in Temple, Texas, I could not hear anything coming through until I removed the stock antenna & installed the antenna I recommended.

There is another Remtronix antenna that has a smaller antenna, but it is horrible for bending (Peyronie's disease). Well, I am rather rough on equipment.

I believe most of your listening will be Phase I, not Phase II in that area. It has been some time since I've driven that way.

Please remember the limitations of your radio. The 436HP has problems with linear simulcast distortion.

Thanks for the information. I think I’ll try out the two antennas you suggested.
