Is 2meter radio traffic a thing of a past in Maine?
I'm not in Maine, so I don't know what your local traffic would be like.
However….
Many amateurs have started using DMR or even small hotspots at their home. Unless you have the DMR option on your radio, and are within range of a DMR amateur radio repeater, you may not hear much.
Locally, the 2 meter band is really quiet, and has been for a few years. Other hams report the same thing.
So, not out of the ordinary to not hear anything. Try around commute times, or in the evenings. You can also check the websites for local clubs and see if they have scheduled nets they run.
check out this NWS Skywarn link...I;ve found often the RACES/SKYWARN repeataer is also the local chat machine in many places.
Ham in general is quiet in Maine. The most active repeaters in southern Maine are 09 in Falmouth and 88 out of Buckfield. 88 is parted of a linked system that is transitioning to DMR. Up your way, 67 out of Augusta and 700 out of LItchfield are good ones to catch up with people. 655 off of Mt. Washington covers really well and is fairly active. UHF is really quiet, but 225 out of Windham and 444.4000 out of Topsham seem to get used regularly.
DMR is definitely more used in 2M than analog. UHF in general is minimally used around here for HAM.
