Just seems to me there isn’t anymore radio traffic via a scanner. I’m studying right now for my tech license now

I am a lineman for the county.
I'm not in Maine, so I don't know what your local traffic would be like.

However….
Many amateurs have started using DMR or even small hotspots at their home. Unless you have the DMR option on your radio, and are within range of a DMR amateur radio repeater, you may not hear much.

Locally, the 2 meter band is really quiet, and has been for a few years. Other hams report the same thing.
So, not out of the ordinary to not hear anything. Try around commute times, or in the evenings. You can also check the websites for local clubs and see if they have scheduled nets they run.

The ham guys here don't shut up once they start. I think most is 70cm? I had both entered in at one point. Although I do live in retirement central.

Ham in general is quiet in Maine. The most active repeaters in southern Maine are 09 in Falmouth and 88 out of Buckfield. 88 is parted of a linked system that is transitioning to DMR. Up your way, 67 out of Augusta and 700 out of LItchfield are good ones to catch up with people. 655 off of Mt. Washington covers really well and is fairly active. UHF is really quiet, but 225 out of Windham and 444.4000 out of Topsham seem to get used regularly.

Ya I was looking for radios today and I’m going to get a dual band analog and DMR radio when I get my license!

Thank you for your response

W1QUI .09 in Falmouth and W1BST 147.03 are what I heard most activity on while on vacation in August. And that was mostly the nets.

GMRS seems to much more active in Maine as of recent than ham from my summers spent there. I don't even bother turning the ham radio on most days.
