I got an email today about a new Magic Jack that now no longer requires a computer to use. It plugs into your 110v outlet. How does it work? My guess is it is Broad Band over Power Lines. Is it legal? Not sure. There goes the spectrum neighborhood.

Bought one a few weeks ago. It does work, but the sound quality varies during the day and the sound quality is never completely as sharp as the regular hard line. Good for a second line to be used occasionally, but I was planning on using it for work - not the best choice. Just my opinion!

Also might add that with VOIP there is not any e-911 data so if you call the local PD or FD they will not have your address appear on their screen.

5. Emergency calls
Important limitations on 9-1-1 service: We offer a form of 9-1-1 service that is similar to traditional 9-1-1 service but has some important differences and limitations when compared with enhanced 9-1-1 service (E911) available in certain locations in conjunction with traditional telephone service. With both traditional 9-1-1 and E911 service, your call is sent directly to the nearest emergency response centre. In addition, with E911 service, your callback number and address are visible to the emergency response centre call–taker. With magicJack's 9-1-1 service, our third-party operators route your call to the proper emergency services agency anywhere in the country using the 9-1-1 network, but your phone number and location are not visible to the emergency response centre call-taker. You should be prepared to provide or confirm your address and call-back number with the operator. Do not hang up unless told directly to do so and if disconnected, dial 9-1-1 again.

We've had the regular MagicJack

for over 5 years and the sound quality is as good as our landline phone was. We dumped the landline because of the outrageous cost and haven't missed it at all. The 911 issue isn't a concern, I have a cell phone when out of town or visiting in-laws, and in case of an emergency, that's the goto phone. And my wife uses the MagicJack to make all her long distance calls for cheap!!!

I got one for my grandkids because their mom cannot afford a phone for the apartment, & I cannot afford paying for another cell phone for her. It works great except when the comcast internet slows down, usually 4-6PM. Also you can choose your own number with lots of choices of area codes.

I find it hard to believe it will ring a regular old telephone with a real bell, but it does. Also since you don't need a computer you can take it with you if you are going somewhere there is an ethernet or USB internet connection and use it there just by plugging it in.

Follow up: Some of the issues with my MagicJack+ may be caused by my cable provider. I have all three services (phone, internet, TV) and have been having problems recently. It was diagnosed as a weak signal to my modem which controls them all. The tech is coming today to fix, I have high hopes that this will resolve some of the problems I have been having, especially the voice drop outs and inconsistent sound quality.
