COLORADO CITY, Colo. -- A tractor trailer plowed into a construction area on northbound Interstate 25 in Pueblo County Wednesday, killing a highway worker and seriously injuring another, the Colorado Department of Investigation said.

The crash happened at 10:43 a.m., at mile marker 72. That is two miles south of Colorado City in Pueblo County, the state patrol said.

According to 7News, the truck ran into a rototiller machine, starting a fire. The worker who died was operating the rototiller. He has not been identified. A second worker jumped off the bridge to escape the crash and suffered a broken leg.

The big rig was carrying a load of rock, the Colorado State Patrol said.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed following the accident. Northbound traffic was detoured off the interstate at Walsenburg.

Two CDOT workers were killed in December 2004, when a drunken driver plowed into them on Interstate 25 between Highway 36 and 84th Avenue.
