Currently, there is talk about a large fire with evacuations from several areas on GEvent 01 (TG 1010). I am hearing Crawford County Central Dispatch, talking about sending evacuees to Kirtland Community College in Roscommon. Apparently, they want everyone within a five mile radius of M-18 and F-97 to listen to the radio and TV stations, and be prepared to evacuate if necessary. Command Post is being established at the Kirtland Range.

7 & 4 News update

A large forest fire is burning in the southeast corner of Crawford County and residents are being evacuated.

Anyone within a 10-mile radius of F-97 and M-18 should evacuate according to Crawford County officials. The Department of Natural Resources says the fire is about 150 acres and is expected to cross M-18.

7 & 4 Storm Team Meteorologist Joe Charlevoix says the wind direction is northeast at around 15-20 mph. Temperatures are in the mid-70's at the site of the fire.

7 & 4 News has a crew heading to the scene and will update you as more details are available.

At this time only about 20% of the fire is under control.

Winds are picking back up 5-15 mph this afternoon.

Meridian Fire Update

At 9:00 this morning, crews will be re-opening M-18 for people who were evacuated. The general public will be able to use the road at 1:00 this afternoon.

Carol Nilsson with the U.S. Forest Service says the fire is around 8,500 acres and is 80% contained. She said there is one area on the west end of the fire that will remain closed today due to gusty winds and that is the area firefighters will be focusing on. People who live in that area will be allowed to check on their property, but they will not be able to stay the night.
