Maldol AL-500H Antenna

Was curious if anyone has used this antenna for MilCom monitoring and if so what kinda results have you experienced. I've narrowed my choice down to this antenna or the Diamond RH77CA.

Hi, I just ordered one to go with my Yuipteru MVT7100. I'll try to post my opinion later this week. I do have the Diamond and can't say it's better than any of my other HT antennas for milair.

Universal Radio also has a portable antenna with a double joint so you can point the antenna up regardless of the orientation of the scanner and the whip is marked for optimum use at different frequencies. It's the Maldol AH-W100RX.

I have this antenna, and I use it on my Icom R20. I can't attest to MilAir, because the activity has been kind of light in my immediate area, but I can say it really kicks butt on the VHF Air Band...

I certainly listen to my share of VHF Air as well as MilCom...I'm currently getting my best results using the RS center-loaded telescoping whip with only the bottom four sections extended. This configuration does hamper the 108-136Mhz band.

Ran a brief test between the Diamond RH77 and the Maldol AL500h. Using my MVT 7100 I scanned my commerical air frequency group for about the same amount of time in the same location. I got about 35% additional frequency hits using the AL500 than I did with the R77. The interesting thing is that the hits on the R77 seemed to be concentrated in the upper reaches of the band, above 130MHz. The AL500 got hits throughout the band.

Milair is sporadic around here so I'll keep trying to do a test in that area.

The RH77CA's sweet spot is in the 440-450MHz area. It works very well in the 150MHz band as well. Not so hot in the 850MHz band however. Haven't tried the Maldol.

Agree, I have the Maldol too and it is great. I extend it 3 stages and pick-up a ton of action in all bands (including some of my EDACS action). Until I get an outside set-up, this is my antenna of choice at home. And, until I get my mobile, I use the Diamond RH77CA or the Seeker in my car.

Al-500h

I was in Juns (a ham shop) today and spotted one of these. I happen to have my AOR-8000 with me. Stuck the 500 on and the radio came to life. Hearing air to ground and ground to air on the LAX "north" frequency 133.9 from Culver city.
Anyway I like the looks of the antenna, though it is on the non ridged side.
My favorite air band antenna is a smiley it is the longest telescopic antenna that I have it works great on shortwave but is cut for the center of the VHF air-band. That thing works great but it is way too big. The 500 is a step in the right direction size and seems to wake my radios up a bit. That is the whole idea right?

I read the good reviews for the AL-500H on this forum and picked one up this week. It seems to do very well so far. I havent been able to use it outside of my house yet but even inside, I compared it to the standard rubber duckie that came with my Pro-95 that I use for Civil Air scanning and this antenna definitely pulls in more signals and seems to get commercial traffic coming from farther away. If it does a lot better when mobile, I will be able to fully justify the price. For now, I just rate it good. I will keep testing it out and try to report back
