You have two shows confused. There is a DEA show and a MANHUNTERS. They are completely separate. DEA is produced by the weatherman of NBC Al Roker.
The US Marshals are using Nextel 90% of the time. They have been using their radios on the show for close up work when they are sitting on a house or during a raid so they have one to many rather than one to one communications. They have been primarily in the NJ area but have also been in NY, recently Spring Valley and Yonkers along with a trip to Florida.
The Mayor may not be happy but it's a condition that has been fostered among the residents of the Newark and the surrounding communities. Sharpe James (convict) the former mayor rode around in a Rolls Royce and made more money then the Mayor of NYC.
Did we already forget about the autotheft task force of Union and Essex counties? It's an area made for crime shows. Does anyone have a positive spin on the area?
Much of the "Nextel" stuff they show is FAKE. You can tell by the filming they did that it is separate shooting done for either editing the show where they missed filming something and needed to patch the story line, or they wanted to cover-up something that they did not want you to hear or see. About 10% of the Nextel on the show is real where it was convenient to use because two-ways were not within reach. Regular phone coms are also used like that. But the real federal two-way coms are very much used, and the show gives you bits and pieces of that during surveillance and takedowns. How good that P25 audio sounds, huh? That is something I was happy to hear...real big /\/\ P25 audio quality right in the car! Was it P25 "in the clear"? Or was it P25 encrypted audio??? Either way, it sounded very good.
I have noticed they sometimes carry more then one two-way for talking to other agencies involved in the "Task Force". Why? Because they each drive vehicles from their own agency and may not have common channels to talk on in those situations. Some cities do, and some don't. Plus there are coverage limitations on shared frequencies. What is neat to see is how each agency involved in the task force has certain roles to make the operation function smoothly and quickly. If they did not work together, it would most likely be a bureaucratic nightmare to get anything done. So that is why they use different systems to communicate on. You just need to listen to all of them, but the majority is on USM channels. You guys who live up there are lucky!
So the pattern is easy to spot, and it lines up well with what you actually hear on the scanner except for the 90% FAKE Nextel stuff they add to the show.
Happy listening!
Phil
