STRATFORD — A local man who allegedly stole a police/emergency medical service radio was arrested yesterday after he tried to obtain a charger for the device, police said.
Craig Ayers, 53, of McGrath Court, was charged with fourth-degree larceny and criminal mischief.

He was released after posting a $5,000 bond pending arraignment July 18 in Bridgeport Superior Court.

According to police, the town's EMS chief complained that over the weekend a hand-held Motorola emergency radio used by police and EMTs — valued at $700 — was stolen.

Police later received a call from the owner of a local electronics store who reported that Ayers had inquired about getting a charger for the radio.

Officers went to Ayers' home and his wife produced the stolen radio. Police said the marking identifying the radio as town equipment had been scraped off the front of the radio.

Ayers denied that he had stolen the radio, telling police he had purchased it from an unidentified man at The Dock shopping center, police said.
