Yes, as long as you have a scanner capable of tracking EDACS systems, and you're close enough to pick up the control channel. The signal is pretty weak, I can barely pick it up at my home about five miles outside the city limits.

I was just up in Manchester yesterday and was able to listen to their system with no problem. Actually, on the way back down to Nashua I could still hear them, but it started to get scratchy around Exit 6. Scanner was a BCD396T w/ stock antenna.

This is a fairly low power system. I seem to remember that they share some frequencies with Worcester MA, which also runs an EDACS system so the power of both systems is low to avoid interference.

I routinely lose Manchester well before I get to Nashua.

I live in Manchester, and I can hear (almost) everything. The only things you won't hear is when MPD goes "coded". They do this for broadcasts, such as certain alarms, when there may be a chance that the subject of the broadcast (a person breaking into some place) has a scanner and can hear them. From what I understand, they use ProVoice encryption, so even a Pro96 or other digital scanner can't make sense of the digital coding. When they go "coded", the trunking system uses a different protocol for the transmission, which most (if not all) scanners simply ignore. You will just hear HQ call a couple of units.... a long pause... and then the units will acknowledge.

Hope this (long-winded) response helps!

They (Manchester PD) are the only ones that I know of that utilize the ProVoice capabilities of the system... and that's only when they need to encrypt what they are saying (not too often). Most of the PD's radio traffic is still in the clear. It seems like one reason they don't use ProVoice all the time is the problem that plagues most digital systems.... limited coverage. Depending on where the officer is, Dispatch may ask the officer (who is in this case "coded") to repeat what they are saying "not-coded" because they were too garbled to be understood.

On a side note: I have personaly overheard a "coded" message over an MPD officer's radio (I was talking to him when he was in the store that I work at). It sounded just like analog over his radio. The only way I knew it was "coded" was the fact that I couldn't hear it on my scanner (which was right next to me).
