I always equated GIS with computers(software) and civil engineering, as a way to visualize and display spatial data, not an actual brick and mortar office. The example we were taught with was plotting a table of dill cores at a gold mine to visually see the veigns of gold in 3D. then we coluld analyze the best way to remove overburden. Thats why I asked what is a GIS office, not what is GIS. I don't ever remember running down to the GIS office, like I might run to the post office or the SSA. anyway, I guess I'll go look in the phone book to see whrere the local GIS office is. maybe I've driven past it and didn't realize thats what is was.

I always thought of the USGS (United States Geological Survey) as the maker of maps, but I suppose local governments might also need to make maps. thanks for the tip I was going to start with public works, but I like you suggestions better, besides, Planning department comes before public works !!!!
