• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I just picked this unit up, along with a magnetic NMO-style antenna testing resonant at around 50mhz and 150 mhz, for $3.00. I'd never heard of this unit before today, and only picked it up out of curiosity (yard sale item). After researching and finding out how to properly connect the power leads, I at least get it to turn on, and confirm that the speaker works. However, I have no idea of its programming, if any, and when I key the mic, all I get is what I assume is a warning tone of some kind from the speaker (in the roughly 400-600-hz audio range), with no output from the transmitter. I'm connected to a 50-ohm, 1000-watt, shielded dry dummy load, and am running the unit from a 45-amp switching power supply. All positive connections are being made to the same point for test purposes. Does this unit need to be programmed before any transmit test can be made? Is there anything else I may have overlooked? Thanks for any advice.

Well looks like you're going in the right direction. If you press PTT on the mic and there is no transmit just the "bonk" error tone then the transmit side of the programming is missing.

Do you have multiple channels and they all do this?

To find out for sure, you'll have to get a computer with the proper software to find out for sure. Or somebody that can do it for you.

Go take a look at the batlabs site with this link and see if it can provide some of the details you might be missing.

The Maratrac and Radius M400 Mobiles

Another site is the repeater builders site that has more information.

A Quick Look at a Motorola MaraTrac Mobile Radio

The Motorola MaraTrac Index page

Have fun with the radio. There is a bunch if information about these radios. A simple search on the Internet will produce a wealth of information for you.

One other question on this unit. How can I get past the front panel lock if I do not have the key? I'd like to be able to access the programming port. As a last resort, I can solder jumpers onto the pins on the backside of the port and use them to install another port that I CAN access.

The key is the common Motorola #2135. You can search for anyone selling one, they're out there.

The key releases the handle. Behind the center of the handle is a push button to pop the top lid off. Look from the underside and see if you can spot a small silver metal block inside. If you can push the block back from the handle with a screwdriver or something you might get the top off.

Only other way is to just destroy the handle or drill a small hole to get to the button.

I found a cheap key on Ebay and ordered that. The push-button is the one that looks like a hex-dead bolt or screw, if my research is correct.
