This same type of incident killed an Alamo, Georgia officer today. It was the officers 1st day. He just transferred into the department.

He's in custody. He broke into a home in Tonopah, owned by someone he has had issues with in the past, and he was shot during an exchange of gunfire with the homeowner. MCSO responded and took him into custody.

More info should be available in the morning.

Ruiz escorted Hurley back to a Maricopa County substation, brought him into the holding area and removed his handcuffs, according to Penzone. Hurley was “initially passively resistant, then turned on the deputy and a fight ensued,” the sheriff said.

“During the fight, on several occasions, Deputy Ruiz attempted to transmit for assistance on his radio unsuccessfully,” Penzone said. “The suspect beat him unconscious.”

I wonder if in the fight he just couldn't key and transmit 999 or something long enough while defending himself. I know that the NOC Transmitter is 15 miles by car for MCSO from the substation and then I'd assume the station would be covered by south mountain as well. I don't know if they have interior antennas or not, that's one of the things I would think that could help if they don't.

I hope that MCSO system radio coverage did not play a part in this incident. There are not MCSO system transmitters near Van Buren and Dysart. If it was a system coverage issue, this really highlights the need to consolidate systems. There are both a RWC Simulcast G transmitter and a Simulcast J transmitter within about 2 miles of that location.

Cellphone, Is the J TX'r co-located with G at Avondale/Buckeye-MC85?

I also think that the decision to upgrade vs joining a new system was a choice of the current Sheriff as he was adamant about having their own. i could be very mistaken tho

Although most call it the MCSO radio system, as I understand it, it's not an MCSO-owned system. The county as a whole owns it, and MCSO is likely the largest user of the system.

This is correct. MCDOT, Probation, Superior Court, OME, MCSO, and all other county agencies are clients of the system. Maricopa County wanted to 'own' their system and not be beholden to RWC.
