I listened for a few minutes this evening. Talkgroup 2404 is very active with what sounds like jail traffic. I have not heard anything to determine which jail.

You are talking about the new P25 system.. Correct?

If so... Compare voices using 2 scanners. Quickest way label all new P25 talkgroups. Possible the jail site is stand alone not connected to new system.. the way Durango Site is now.

This is the new P25 system.

This is the OLD Motorola system.

Listening to talkgroup 2404 on the new system, this does not appear to be patched to a talkgroup on the old system. I have not listened to Jail talkgroups enough on the old system to recognize voices.

It's funny I just turned the scanner on and hear traffic on I think it was 2902, but then it went quiet. I have the hardest time catching things on this system.

Been hearing traffic on 2902 with units discussing locations in downtown garages. Fairly cryptic conversations, hard to tell what they are doing.

I need to figure out what I am doing wrong. It tells me No system to scan when I try to scan it.

Will the BC796D scan the new or current system? I've programmed it using the "type2 800mhz" system option in my arc250 software but it won't lock on a control channel.

It will not scan the new system, you should be able to pick up the old P16 system.

Where are you located?

You should be able to listen to the old system. Try programming only 1 of the 3 main sites. Either White Tanks (West Valley), Thompson Peak (far north Scottsdale/Fountain Hills, best for the East Valley), or Central Courts (downtown Phoenix). The other sites are more or less only fill ins, and may not have much, if any radio traffic, with few exceptions.

APCO Project 16 (P16) is the mixed mode analog/digital system. This is Maricopa County's old system, and where MCSO patrol operations can still be heard, at least for now:

https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=848

APCO Project 25 (P25) is all digital. This is Maricopa County's new system, and where MCSO jail operations, and all of the other county departments, can now be heard:

https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=9073

This was a short discussion of the two types:

https://forums.radioreference.com/threads/apco-16-vs-25.49235/

Your scanner can only listen to the old system. Once the MCSO patrol operations switch over to the new system (I do not know when that might be), you will need a newer scanner capable of P25 Phase II reception if you want to be able to listen to them, or any other county agency. (The radio systems belong to the county, not the Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office is the largest user of the systems.)

Awesome thanks
I'm building a station where I can monitor multiple agencies
I was trying to use old equipment but it looks like an upgrade is in order. I already have a Pro-2026 for dps Is there anything else I can use the 796 for?

DPS

MCSO Search 8 159.0900, MCSO Lake Pleasant Car-Car 159.3900, MCSO Car-Car 158.9100, Anthem Sheriff's Posse 453.3375, Sun City Posse 860.5375

Phoenix FD A-deck fireground/HazMat operations

Mesa FD B-deck fireground/HazMat operations

Rural-Metro FD

Federal agencies (law enforcement such as ATF, CBP, DEA, FBI and Secret Service at this link will be encrypted. BLM law enforcement is P25 digital which your scanner can't do, and is sometimes encrypted, many other agencies are monitorable however, such as the Tonto National Forest): https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=824

NIFC: https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=7769

NIRSC: https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=9454

Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs
https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=7279

Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, Arizona State Parks, and Arizona Game and Fish Department
https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=825

Every scanner listener should have these channels: NIFOG interoperability, Public Safety Common, and Arizona Interoperability/Common (except 700 MHz which is all P25 digital which your scanner can't do)

National: https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=7742

Arizona: https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=3333

Federal Disaster: https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=7770

Federal Common: https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=7764

There's probably more, but this is more than enough to get you started.

If they want to continue to build distrust, they will.

Not high on their list of concerns and far behind those that are, officer safety, suspect intelligence etc... agree or not, it's an easy story to sell to those who approve it in their respective departments and/or councils.
