Hello, I am in Canada and I would like to go on a boat trip with a friend and I would like to communicate with him with a marine VHF radio and I would like to know which channels I should use so as not to disturb the authorities or commercial boats

Channel 68 is for recreational boat use. You'd be safe there.

Channel 9 is often used as a 'calling' channel. Make contact there and switch to a working channel, like 68...

Like Mckenna says anyone that CCG does not monitor , the other thing is look for low power settings on radio 1 watt etc , extends your battery life and depending on location goes the distance

An often overlooked detail about marine radios in pleasure boats is that you require a license to operate them. RIC-16 — Professional Radio Operator Certificates

It's easy to pass. You can even get the license online from the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron. (They are ISC accredited examiners).. Home - CPS
