Does anyone hear any activity on any of the VHF Marine channels near inland lakes? I live down the street from Watauga Lake in NE Tennessee and only a few air miles from several of the marinas and occaisonally hear activity on Marine Ch 9(156.45) and I am wondering if anyone else hears activity on any of the marine channels.

Yeah, its simplex and usually only 1 watt. Marine Mobile radios are limited to the 88(?) channels and the channels are restricted to what type of use is allowed. They only allow more than 1 watt when you are far out from the station you are contacting. What channels are they using on that lake?

So does a marine radio have an adjustable power setting for times when you are far afield (or alake?) and need to reach the Marina? Never had my hands on a marine radio - as is obvious by my question. :D

Marine radios

The max power for consumer based Marine radios is 25 watts for a mobile and usually 5-6 watts on a portable, low power is usually 1 watt. Certain channels require 1 watt or lo-power settings... while most can be run using full power.
Attached is a link... please carefully look at the Frequently asked question section.. it will answer some questions and issues you need to be aware of...and also gives you the channel plan and use.

Hope this helps
